Awww the beach video was fun!  It got Wyatt Ray all riled up, he wants to go play in the sand too!

Is she on any kind of fish oil supplement? Does she have dandruff? Itchy, dry skin is often caused by lack of Omegas/EFAs in the diet, and dog kibble is notoriously low in the right kinds.

Well her diagnosis was "seasonal allergies" ... and considering LA only has ONE apparent season (grrrrr)... FML! She got a coritzone shot and I have to give her a bath later w/some special shampoo. If she starts itching in a couple weeks, I do have those meds that Karen mentioned to give to her. But this is apparently our new reality. Nothing I can do about it (unless we move). Our vet  (who I adore) told me I was his 4th appt today for the SAME issue. Something in LA is making the pooches itchy! And he told me it is very much the worst condition to have (and I know since when my skin is dry and itchy, I am miserable). So hoping that my little chalupa will start to feel better soon.

I am glad it's not an OCD thing. He told me I could give her fish oil supplements, etc but that dry skin isn't the issue so all we can do is treat w/meds. :-( I'll continue to look for some holistic approaches but I know me - I am on Allegra daily most of the year.

Shelby was so low maintenance ... I wonder if any of this is covered by our pet insurance. Sigh....

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Oh...poor Jasper Lily!!  Wow...only one season out there and of course she's allergic to it...sad

I suppose you and Jasper can share the Allegra?  I know dogs can take Claritin but not sure about the Allegra.

Oh and Benadryl...actually had to give Lucian 2 yesterday because he stepped on a bee and started hopping like crazy.  He was stung in his lip a few weeks prior and it swelled up on him but the poor thing had a stinger still stuck in his lip that had to be surgically removed by the vet...oh-my

Once the stinger was out the knot finally went completely away.

Oh the things these poor pups go through...winker

Ahhh. Makes sense. I think my entire L.A. family is on allergy meds, it would make sense that the dogs are too.

Alison,

What pet insurance do you have?? I know the one I have covers meds etc as long as it isn't preventative aka heartworm, worming etc.  I have not had any problems with them and the stuff I have been going through with Jazz & Snickers.  Most pet insurance should cover it.  Submit the claim.

I am sorry that JL has those darn allergies.  I take an allergy pill all year here even with winter.  Have all kinds of them.

Sassy was low maintained too until her OSA.  These 2 would have put me in the poor house if it wasn't for Pet Insurance & Care Credit.

We have Trupanion... I'll turn it in and see if they pay. Apparently now it will be an existing condition but hopefully one that is easily managed with meds.

I feel awful drugging her and giving her shots and I felt pretty attacked for my choices on FB yesterday so I'm feeling like the world's worst dog mom. Someone suggested that I radically change her diet and treat her that way but I needed to get her relief (aka the shot). I was a good dog mom with Shelby .. I was hoping I would be a good dog mom w/Jasper too. But it's a lot to take ... I do the best that I can w/the time and resources I have and honestly, I changed my diet drastically (as in Paleo, no carbs, gluten, sugar) and I STILL get migraines daily and have awful allergies so I am not sure diet is 100% the answer. And as our vet told us, we need to give it some time to really learn about Jasper ... it's only been 4 months here. I've lived in LA for over 7 years and I didn't get allergies till I moved here. It's LA! Plain and simple...

Thank you - Tripawds - for always being supportive and non-judgy ... I am trying w/Jasper .. I am doing the best that I can w/one that doesn't have a voice so I do hope it's enough. I would hate to have to give her away if she can't learn to live in LA since I am not in a position to move right now. I think the meds should help her... I hope.

Jasper Lily is such a doll.....enjoying the beach....rocking her socks :)

My grand dog, Oliver is a pug who has allergies too.....he takes Benadryl which helps a lot....and he no longer gets drowsy from it.

While I live in Southern Ontario, Canada - there are lots of pups (and people) with seasonal allergies.....and believe it or not there is even an allergy to the cold.

Don't fret about Jasper Lily.....give her the meds...I hope they are covered....she will adapt to her environment (literally) with lots of TLC from you.

Hugs

Alison,

In no way are you a "bad dog mom"...you're a wonderful dog parent and will do whatever you can to help alleviate any discomfort your fur baby is in.  Shame on those people for attacking you on FB for trying to help Jasper.  It's easy for people to judge who haven't been in our shoes.  You hold your head up and KNOW in your heart that you're a 100% AWESOME doggie mom!!!

Ok...since I had my little rant...I do hope Jasper is starting to feel some relief from the medication.  And like your vet said it will take a little time to get a handle on Jasper's medical background since you really don't know much about her medical history except she was living on the streets in Mexico.  Don't give up on her now...you're the best thing to happen to that little lady!

Alison you are NOT a bad dog mom, totally the opposite!!! Jasper won't have to go anywhere, you will get this figured out.

Whole Dog Journal is having a webinar on common canine allergies, consider registering for it:

"How to Treat Common Canine Allergies" Live Webinar Event

On Wednesday, October 22 at 7pm ET learn how you can protect your dog from allergies triggered by flea bites... dust... pollen... mold spores... environmental allergens... and foods.

When your dog scratches, chews, and licks himself in a futile effort to relieve unrelenting itching of an allergy, the consequences can be infections, open sores and worse. The good news is that you can help your dog. This Webinar will show you how. You'll learn why dogs develop allergies, what are the most prevalent triggers, and most important, the steps you can take to lessen the risks for your dog.

A web event featuring Nancy Kerns, editor of Whole Dog Journal, in a dynamic live presentation followed by a Q&A session to address registrants' specific concerns about safe-guarding their dogs from allergies.

ALL paid registrants regardless of attendance to the live event will receive a link to the recording of the complete webinar on October 23, 2014.

Thank you all so much! I had no idea that giving a dog an allergy shot in LA would be such a clustermess! I always knew I was the best dog mom in the world when it came to Shelby but w/Jasper .. since I was on the fence about her, I do/did question myself. But she has just as many activities and play time (if not more) than Shelby did and boy or boy is she spoiled like her angel big sister!

This was what I saw after I got done getting ready for work ... could she BE any happier? (and yes, those are 2 babies she is cradling).

Thanks for the info on the webinar. If I get off work early enough, I will look into it! Hugs!

Jasper is just the picture of contentment in that pic.  I assume the allergy shot has helped since she looks so peaceful.

Hang in there!!
