Hello - i just found this site. My 3 year old cat just had a hemipelvectomy on her rear right leg. She was diagnosed with a vaccine injection site fibrosarcoma. She'll need aggressive radiation once healed. It's been a pretty emotional couple of weeks. My question is...for those who have been through this, did you try to have the vaccine company pay for all or part of treatment? What was your experience like?
Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
I know some of our kitty members have been able to get reimbursed when dealing with vaccine associated sarcoma or VAS- they will be along shortly to help with their experiences.
In the meantime Here is a Blog Post about VAS, there are several links in the post with more information on VAS. And Here is a Blog Post with some info on Radiation treatment.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this, how is your girl doing? A hemipelvectomy is a more invasive surgery than most rear amps go through. I hope recovery is going well.

I'm sorry to hear your cat got cancer from a vaccine injection. So did my cat Mona. She had her front leg amputated in June 2014 and I believe she's cancer free now. I hope the same for your cat.
I understand that this is an emotional time for you. It's a shock that a cat can get cancer from a vaccine that is meant to protect the cat from a disease. Please know that your cat will do well getting around on three legs. In time you won't even remember she ever had 4 legs.
Yes, the pharmaceutical company reimbursed me for 1/2 of the amputation costs. Unbeknown to me, my vet contacted them and also filed an adverse reaction report. I think the pharmaceutical companies are covering a greater percentage of the costs these days. It's best to have the help of the vet to ask for all costs including diagnostic tests, surgery, and radiation. I hope you're successful.
Please tell us more about your cat. What's her name? How is her recovery?
