Hi all, I got a 3 month old kitten last week with a back right amputation. The humane society didn't know how it happened as he came into their care with the stump. My carpet is a bit rough and when he walks I noticed it seems like when he hops the back stump kinda rubs the ground a bit?
I didnt want it to rub raw so I tried making a sock crochet for him but that just left yarn bits once I took it off for the night. Then today I tried a glove fingertip then the crochet sock over top, but it just made his stump sweaty and I found puss in the glove piece as well. He seemed fine but after playing for a few minutes I saw he was bleeding a little from the stump?
Any suggestions on what to do to help him? I got the blood to stop but he cried so much with every touch that I wasn't able to get some gauze on him for it. The amputation is right at his knee so he's missing his paw and lower leg. I have a visit to the humane society planned for Wednesday for a worm checkup then next Thursday is an actual vet visit.
Thanks in advance!
Hi there! Thanks for posting and adopting the kitty. What's his name? Eclipse?
It sounds like the partial amputation is causing healing problems as well as mobility issues and pain. This is not unusual especially with very young animals who lose a limb before they develop good motor skills, balance, and core strength. Your vet may recommend a full amputation to resolve the problem. I would be prepared for that recommendation. There are exercises that animal rehab therapists can recommend, but at that level of amputation even that might not help.

If the stump wasn't bothered before, I would leave it alone until you see the vet. Let us know what they say and feel free to post photos so we can see this adorable kitty!
This is how adding images works in the Forums.
Basically you need to:
- upload a photo somewhere like your own Tripawds blog, or a public image hosting site like Imgur.com
- then copy the image URL (or just tap the image and copy it if you're on a mobile device)
- return here, and paste the image into your forum post.
Hope that makes sense. Let us know if you'd like help!
Thank you for giving that kitty a loving hand caring home.
So sorry the stump is causing such a rough time for you both. As Jerry said, full amputation will be the best route. We do see this happen sometimes when a stump is left, open sores, possible infection develop and full amputation is the answer.
Stay connected and update when uou can. We will be right bynyour side to help you navigate through recovery and onto a Happy painfree kitty.....and clean carpet!😉
