Pittens is looking great!
One thing, you said only three days of Buprenorphine and Gabapentin were send with you. Usually 3 days is not enough. Most on here seem to be on pain medication ( Buprenorphine ) for about a week and Gabapentin for much longer. So might be prudent to ask about getting more before you run out. Granted Pittens might just breeze through since she is doing so great, but I suspect a lot of her speedy recovery is due to good pain management .

Dawna thanks for that reminder about Gabapentin, I forgot to mention that. Good idea to ask for more.

I FULLY AGREE. the pain meds have fully saved her! I spoke with the resident dr today and told her and she said absolutely they can send more. so I am thinming in a day to ask.
She said I may be suprised and ahe wint need it. But I do not see that as rhe case. The reason she is doing well is because the pain management has been tailored so well.
She needs to be fully healed before getting off them. I FULLY AGREE
Sumi - If you are thinking that you want more gabapentin (and I think to be on the safe side you should have at least 2 weeks worth), I would not wait on asking for the prescription. You do not need to purchase the meds at AMC. You can get the prescription and have it filled at a local pharmacy, such as CVS, or even at your local vet (AMC can just call them). Griffin came off his meds after surgery very quickly, but even he was on gabapentin for a week. ~ Stacy
Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com
Buprenorphine is cleared by the liver so it tends to be a good choice for cats with kidney disease who need ongoing pain control. All opiates are used with caution and are a controlled substance so is not over-prescribed. Mona had enough for about a week but became quite restless from it so was on it for about 3 days. She remained on the Metacam for Felines (anti-inflammatory, pain relief) for less than two weeks.
I wasnt prescribed any anti inflammatory.... should I ask?
ok so this may be enough buprenex. what if she just stays as she is now....She is really drugged up. Very sleepy and has moments of walkeing but then falls next to me and sleeps. not much movement.
also in staying in the same room withbher and tok the week off from work and just reading a book I have wanted tonread for more than a year but never found the focus. so Im in her room. She is only alone when I shower, see the other 2, or make food.
but she would be ok I think.
I dont want to find out ...Id r ather be over certain she is fine and then give space.
I wonder how I would know if she needs more. I dont want breakthrough pajn to be the indicator.
Hi Sumi - Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you only had 3 days of each. Griffin was on an opiate (tramadol) that made him very restless and disoriented, so he came off that 4 days after surgery. He had been on an anti-inflammatory (galliprant) prior to the surgery and continued on that for only 4 days after. I don't know cats at all, but it seems like from what others have said that Pittens seems comfortable, if a bit drugged, which is a good think for the first few days after surgery. She is certainly hitting milestones, like eating, drinking, and urinating, so unless you think she is uncomfortable, perhaps just see how it goes with the gabapentin. ~ Stacy

The poop usually takes a little while because you fasted her for surgery, then she had anesthesia and pain meds at hospital. As she continues to eat and drink, what goes in must come out 😊
It took Huck a good week to finally give it up, lol. If she doesn't go in the next few days, call the doc and see if you can give her something to help her go.
❤
