Found this 5 month old kitten last Sunday. He had been walking on the side of his healed broken paw creating a bad sore.
I adopted a 3 legged cat years ago, and I know they can do fine. I just wondered if anyone knew of any cases where some kind of sleeve can be made to put on the kitten's leg so that a sore doesn't occur. He walks on it just fine, but getting a sore that will keep infecting is not an option. He will be indoors, of course. Just wondered if anyone knew about another option. Naturally, I'm willing to amputate if nothing else can be done, but just wondered if anyone heard of anything that can help before I opt for amputation. Thanks.
Well thank you for giving that kitty a home! Have you named him yet? And why does the vet want to amputate? What was the diagnosis?
You are smart to wait and se what all your options are for this guy. It would be good to check in with an orthopedic expert to get a second option and find out why he is walking with a compromised gait. He may not need amputation at all.
To answer your question, no, I haven't heard of anything like what you are describing, nor have we seen anything like that here in the 12 years we've been a community. I'm not a vet but it would seem to me that anything you would put on the paw would rub and cause friction, then create a sore. But I would talk to the ortho vet first. Then let us know what they tell you, I'd like to learn from this so keep us posted OK?

Thank you, Jerry. I agree with you. Anything put on the leg that he's walking on will rub and cause problems. His name is Gabriel. Took a month to trap him. Even though he turned out to be friendly, he was too scared to come to me. I didn't really see him till more recently. I'd hear him crying, like he wanted help, but I couldn't see him or get him. Frustrating. I figured he was feral and was quite relieved when he was not. I and my friend/neighbor trap ferals, get them fixed, have heated shelters for them, and take care of them for the rest of their lives outside.
My vet said Gabriel must have broken the leg outside, and it healed on its own in this peculiar way. Instead of limping, he uses it to walk on.
Yes, I imagine an orthopedic expert would be a good idea for a second option.
Thank you so much for your help. I wish everyone a happy new year.
