Well, I'm really sad to report that we had to put down Tiger last night. He went back to the vet yesterday morning because he still wouldn't eat on his own, though he had begun to drink a little water voluntarily. They were to check him out, get him on fluids and whatever, hopefully to feel better after a day and have more energy to maybe eat. They re-did his bloodwork and found all sorts of issues. Very high glucose (now diabetic), anemic, pancreatitis, etc. We transferred him to the emergency/specialty vet. Upon exam there, they found that though his vitals were fine, his heart rate was low. So before beginning all the aggressive treatment of fluid and possibly blood transfusion and insulin to get him stable, they first did an echocardiogram, suspecting early heart failure. This was the case, already an enlarged heart and fluids around the heart. His prognosis for moving forward in any direction was not good. They explained it as basically SIRS (systemic inflammation); probably had some underlying conditions that got triggered by the high stress on his body. As of yesterday, his loss of leg and struggle to heal and recover were suddenly at the bottom of the list. It is still such a shock to think last Tuesday morning he just had a broken leg.
My 14 year old daughter was with me, who says Tiger was like her kid, and we both got to spend a little time with him, including telling him we forgave him for all the nights he woke her repeatedly demanding food - ha!. His food love also meant that my daughter had actually taught him to sit, and to play patty-cake where he'd tap his paw to her hand. He had the best purr and was really a people cat. A very devastating outcome, for sure, but it was going to be such a tough go to pull through treatment, much less longer term diabetes and all. I'm glad he's no longer struggling in pain. I'm sorry for such a downer post this morning; but again, I want thank you all for chiming in over this last week with suggestions, support, care and empathy.

I am so very, very sorry.
Well done for doing all you could for him, you showed your love for him by doing your very best despite the pain and worry it caused you. Cats appreciate that, they really do.

Noooo.. oh no, I am so very sorry for your loss. I know your hearts are broken and I am keeping you in my thoughts. 14 years old ... such a hard time to lose a loved one. It sounds like they had a wonderful bond.
You did everything you could and gave Tiger the best life. He will be in your hearts forever. Please give your little girl a hug for me. And I am giving you a hug too. I am so sorry.

Nooooo! My deepest condolences, I'm so sad to read this. What a terrible shock! I have never heard of SIRS before. Poor Tiger.
No need to apologize for posting this news, really. We all grieve when a member gets their wings, everyone feels the heartache because we understand the depth of love shared with critters like Tiger. And we are here for you always. If you want to share Tiger's life with us like in a Coping with Loss tribute we would love to know more about him.
Just know that you did your best for your big guy, and he went to the Bridge knowing he was loved and treasured. No kitty could ask for more.
((((hugs))))

Abs stunned to read this. We are all so very, very sorry. Tiger is our family and we already feel in love with humans we learned about his sweet purr and feisty personality.
Please know that you absolutely did EVERYTHING possible for your boy!! What started out as a sudden broken leg ended up exposing u underlying issues that jist could not be forseen! Jist like humans, surgery can trigger a hidden issue that cannot be detected ahead of time.
You gave him the greatest gift of love we can ever give our beloved pets...you gave him release from a failing earthly body that he no longer needed. He knew you loved enoigh to set him free. And clearly he was ready.
I know we all, smiled through our tears as you shared the way your daughter taught Tiger to play patty cake for food. That is such a treasured memory!
The wonderful thing about The Rainbow Bridge is that Tiger can now eat non stop, anything he wants, and never gai s too much weight!. All the Bridge occupants never have to go on a diet.
Your sweet Tiger will connect with you and let your know he's okay and he is.
Sending love and the sweet sounds of Tiger purring in your ear
