Tripawd Tuesday Q&A: Sis’ Story

How old is your Tripawd?

6 years old

When and why did your Tripawd lose a leg?

January 2021 – Sis was hit by a car as she went to meet my son at the gate of our farm. Her leg was broken and dislocated. The vet casted it in an attempt to save it but was unsuccessful.

How did your Tripawd adapt to life on three? Did the reality match your expectations?

Amazingly well! When our vet suggested amputation was the next step, I was definitely hesitant. She hasn’t missed the 4th leg and only has minor set backs.

What are your Tripawd’s favorite things to do?

Chase squirrels in our back yard and play with her best friend, Elgin, our cat who is part Maine Coon.

What is the biggest lesson you learned from your Tripawd so far?

Resiliency is definitely the biggest lesson from our experience with Sis. It hasn’t slowed her down one bit and she is just as happy and playful as before. Sis has always had a wonderful temperament but I think our experience with the accident, surgery and recovery has created an unbreakable bond between us. She is such an amazing creature and I am so grateful to her in our lives!

What is your best advice to someone who is about to go through amputation with their pet, or someone who is thinking of adopting a Tripawd?

In our experience, the 4th leg really is a spare! Give your recovering fur baby lots of love during recovery and be patient. They will likely be back to normal, or their new normal, very soon! Animals are very resilient and will likely not even miss the 4th leg. One piece of advice we would give, especially if the amputated leg is a front leg, is to maintain a healthy weight. We have worked with our vet to be sure we do everything we can to keep her remaining front leg healthy and not put undue stress or strain on it.
