I took Tom to the vet today for his first puppy visit and asked the vet for a referral to a veterinary nutritionist (I plan on cooking all of Tom's meals). He looked in his big book of veterinary diplomats and (surprise), there are none in OK. The closest board certified vet-nutritionist people are in Kansas and Colorado (CSU). My question is, does anyone know of a good veterinary nutritionist who is willing to consult with me over the phone or internet-- I'm looking for menus specifically designed for 11 week old Tom (golden retriever) that are going to provide the correct balance of everything he needs-- and we'll need to alter these menus as he grows. I've read numerous recipe books, but I want to make absolutely certain he's getting what he needs to develop.

We've been cooking our dog's (K) meals for many years, primarily to help prevent her chronic pancreatitis from flaring up. Our regular vet didn't feel comfortable formulating a homemade diet for K so she referred us to a vet who is a nutritionist and consults over the phone and internet. Her name is Rebecca Remillard DVM and she's at Angel Memorial Hospital near Boston. Her email address is rremillard@mspca.org.
Her initial fee (I don't remember what it was because it was about 6 yrs ago) covers dietary adjustments over the years as well. For example, about a year ago, our K started having chronic urinary tract infections and the pH of her urine was too high... and Dr. Remillard helped us tweak K's diet to deal with that without more fees.
We've liked her... but, be prepared that she's extremely business-like to the point of "brusque" at times. That's been fine with me because she is a great expert.
K, an 8 year old chocolate lab, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the radius and ulna on 12/23/11. She had stereotactic radiation to kill the bone tumors, and 3 rounds of carboplatin. On 3/16/12, lung mets were found. We tried several different kinds of chemotherapy to slow the lung mets but none worked. Finally, mets appeared at other sites, including her spine. She earned her angel wings on July 15, 2012. K changed my life, and I'll never forget her. Our/my journey is chronicled at romp-roll-rockies.blogspot.com.

The vet I use for my dogs for acupuncture/cold laser and chiropractic, also does nutritional consults. He has helped a friend's Golden immensely on her diet to clear up some health issues and it's working!
