Cooper is doing well on meds for pain management - the previcox is stronger than the vet wants to leave him on long term - we are researching knee braces for dogs right now as surgery on Coops knee just isnt a great option. Cooper has had excellent mobility on the previcox , but I would sure like to add the support of a good brace along with whatever meds we use. If anyone has such a brace for a dog Coops size or knows of anything good I appreciate hearing about it.

I have that Carpoflex one but I doubt it's big enough. But why don't you measure his knee and see. I'd send it in a heartbeat!

That's an excellent vet you have there Coops. My first vet was such a nincompoop, he just gave me the Previcox and said nothing about side effects or how strong it was, nothing. I nearly died from it because my pawrents didn't know what signs to look for after long term use. They found out about side effects on the Interwebs and took me to a new vet.
Paws up dude! Hope the brace works for ya.

Is your vet opposed to Rimadyl or that other one that starts with an "m"?
Comet was on Rimadyl everyday without any problems.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Metacam? Meloxicam?
Jerry had no problem on Metacam, but Rimadyl tore him up inside pretty quickly. Every dog is different.
All dog owners should be aware of the potential for deadly side effects of long term NSAID use.

we thought about getting Bud the Atrac brace but after some conversation, we werent sure how it would work with his no hip/lil nub and the latching system. They have a web site and they are custom for the dog. Spendy but not as much as surgery. If you find a good product option for a rear leg amp....I'd like to hear about it!!

I looked at the a trac brace as I had read about it on your earlier post, and it looks really good, it would probably work better for Cooper since he has both back legs but yeah a bit pricey... DEFINITELY not as much as surgery, We were lucky with Coopers amputations - they were just under 1000.00 - they had originally taken only the lower part of the leg but when the incision opened and necrosis set in they had to take the rest, but surgery for his knee looks like it could run into around 5000.00 with rehab. If I am not mistaken the med my vet is looking at is Duralactin, but I will let you all know for sure Friday. Thanks - oh Ge'Lena... I doubt that your brace is big enough - if you are talking about measuring right around his knee it is around 16 inches.

Follow up on Cooper -
Cooper went in this morning and had both back legs examined, the vet was immediately impressed with how well Cooper is walking. He really moved both of Coops knees through the range of motion and could feel the clicking and popping, but said that Cooper shows no pain at all, he said that it looks like Cooper has a slight tear in the meniscus – but that he has in no way blown any ligaments. He also advised against any kind of brace at this time so Admin how do I retract my request for a brace? He said Cooper is doing so well with just the Ruff Wear harness that he wouldnt change a thing, oh the meds he prescribed is Duralactin – for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions – it is all natural and not harmful to kidneys or liver. Oh besides the slight tear in the left knee Cooper has arthritus in both legs but he said it was very mild for a dog Coopers size and age. Thanks for all the warm thoughts and support while we worked through this I will let you know how the Duralactin works, it could be good for any of your dogs with leg issues and it is very reasonably priced.

we had our girl jane on duralactin for quite some time, and it really made a difference for her. some pups do have stomach/diarrhea issues because of the milk base, so you might want to go slowly. when jane passed, we gave the remainder of her bottle to neighbor pup bailey who is a 13 year old springer spaniel with severe arthritis. bailey too shows improvement with it!! good luck with it, hopefully cooper will continue to improve!!!

It may all depend on the dog. Jerry did well on Metacam for more than a year, whereas Rimadyl and Previcox both tore him up inside within a week or so. Hopefully Pam can provide a professional opinion.

I would just ensure you give it with food. I don't know if that matters but it can't hurt!
That stifle brace was cool but expensive! Glad he doesn't need it.
I still scratch my head at the bandage that Comet had after her TPLO knee surgeries. It was a bandage but it was called a Robert Jones bandage and I think it cost around $120! Again, it was a bandage!
