Yes, please update us on Zeus. Many have fallen in love with your boy and hope those antibiotics have worked their magic and Zeus is doing much better. Sending hugs and virtual fries your way
Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
Thanks for asking and for caring so much. He seems a bit better today - brighter eyes and a little more energy. His temp (yep, had to learn to take that and he is NOT happy) is staying normal. I am still a bit worried b/c he seems to tire so easily and pant alot after hardly any activity, but I guess that is expected after having such a high fever and while his body is fighting infection. We have a follow-up on Tuesday morning to check the WBC count, etc.
My biggest concern is that the vet gave him a long-term antibiotic shot (Convenia - it lasts 14 days) AND gave him a pill-form antibiotic (Primor) that he also takes for 14 days. Is it normal for them to double-up on antibiotics? With his WBC count so low I want to be sure we're not putting too much stress on his system...
By the way, you guys just melt me with the "sweet" and "cute" comments. I also just fall in love with the other dogs on this site!
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Lisa, I am no veterinarian. I just pretend to be one. But I think that often more than one antibiotic is prescribed to make sure they hit all the posibilities. The only foolproof way (to my pretend knowledge) to know if a drug will kill bacteria is to do a culture. That's hard for a dog. So I imagine they want to prescribe what works for most scenarios. And if drug A works for 85% of the bacteria that cause canine pneumonia and drug B works for the other 15%, you get both.
And I will not charge you for that consultation. It's on the house.
Glad to hear Zeus is perking up. And yeah, it's hard work to breathe when the lungs are compromised and you're fighting off a lot of stuff. It sounds to me like he's doing pretty well. I hope the weekend sees even more improvement.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.
Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/
Don't know nuthin' 'bout doublin' up on antibiotics, but I sure am glad to hear about him being brighter eyed!
I think that sounds pretty normal for him to be more tired. His energy is going elsewhere to help him get well!
Please give him a smooch from his Tripawd Aunt Jackie!
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
