Hi All,

Another quick question .. Bella is home 2 weeks post op and is now doing wonderful.  Staples are out.. Vet was impressed how well she is getting around.. slowly took her back off tramadol this week.. with no side effects like we had last weekend with the panting and rapid heartrate... She was back to normal.. then tonight.. Yelping out of the blue for what seem no reason.. Vet said she should be in no pain.. no panting.. sleeping now very comfortable... Any ideas?

1st chemo treatment tomorrow....

Thanks,

karen and bella

Hi Mybella

Yes, sounds very familiar. It might be phantom pain . I mentioned this in response to Geogia girl and yourself talking about Yelping earlier this week. Lots of dogs have this symptom and usually it is relieved with Gabapentin. Check that other post, then the archives for "Phantom Pain " and "Gabapentin".

Good luck - mybella will be okay!

Yep, definitely sounds like phantom limb pain. Our Required Reading List has some good info about it, scroll down and check it out. Good luck, keep us posted OK?

For what it's worth....Isabelle didn't have much of a problem w/nerve related pain & she was only on neurontin (gabapentin) for 3 days, but I suspect the cold laser therapy played a role. My vet uses it on all post amputations & has observed very minimal residual nerve pain.

Yep, sounds like phantom to me also. About 5 days post op all of a sudden Gus yelped a the top of his lungs, sounded like he was hit by a car, only lasted a few seconds but he started having them a couple times a day. They lasted about 4 weeks, but by the 4th week it was more like a small whimper. I would just stay with him while they  happened, he would be ok after a few minutes. I had him on Gabapentin which I think helped, he still had it but the pain must have been much more tolorable. Good luck, one of the bumps in the road some of us have to deal with on this journey. Hang in there, it does get better!!! Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
