Hello there!

I'm new to Tripawds and I'm reaching out for advice and help on what to expect after surgery for an amputation. My basset hound Lola Bean is having her right hind leg amputated tomorrow due to an aggressive soft tissue sarcoma in her foot. I'm worried and scared and I feel very unprepared for what to expect.

Can anyone out there provide me with some tips and help? Thank you!

Hi Lola Bean and family, welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. I'm so sorry for the diagnosis, I know it's really scary. But rest assured that dogs handle it far better than people! It really is true. Don't panic, you came to the right place.

We created a series of articles called "What To Expect" that you may find helpful. Our e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs " and Jerry's Required Reading List are also helpful places to check out.

My best piece of advice is to remember to Be More Dog . Set the tone for a good recovery by maintaining a pawsitive attitude and Lola will follow in your footsteps. In amputation recovery, attitude is everything! Of course you will feel like crying and be upset, but do your best to take it outside where she can't see you. The stronger you are the more she will reflect that energy back to you.

Meanwhile, do you have traction in your home? What about tempting treats for her to eat during recovery? Our Tripawds Nutrition Blog has tons of ideas to keep her appetite up.

I hope this helps! Stay tuned for input from others and just let us know what questions you have, we are here to help.

Thanks for sharing Maya's story, Sally. You have a memory like a steel trap! It does look like some of the photos are gone but I spied one post where Maya's adorable self shows up:
