We picked Jasper up on Saturday and much to my surprise he looked really good. From all the advice on this website I prepared myself for how big and ugly the incision would be. I think I was just so happy to see him up, wagging his tail excited to see us that the wound was the furthest thing from my mind.
We had a really great day Saturday. He was getting around great, eating, and seemed relatively comfortable. He has some fluid buildup so we are doing a warm compress 3x a day.
Sunday and today are a different story. He woke up yesterday fine but as the day went on seem to get more and more uncomfortable. He let out the most heart wrenching cries a few times trying to get up. I have been sleeping with him on the floor since he came home. I am thinking he did so well on Saturday because he still had the heavy duty iv meds in him.
He was getting 2 tab tramedol 2x daily and 2 tab gabapentin 2x daily along with an antibiotic. Last night was pretty rough. Not much sleep at all. I called the vet this morning and they increased the tramedol and gabapentin to 3x a day. Hoping that will help make him more comfy.
His incision looks good...no oozing or anything so that is good. Still waiting on a diagnoses as to what caused the nerve damage in his leg. Pathology report should be in tomorrow or wed. Vet said by the look of the tissue and nerves she didn't think it was any type of cancer. Hoping to get some sort of answer soon.
Glad that you're home Jasper. Rest up my friend, you need it. This sounds like it's part of the two weeks from hell recovery period. Yes, we agree, many dogs come home right from the hospital all doped up on pain meds and feeling invincible, and then BLAMMO! They crash the day after and feel terrible. It's pretty normal though and as long as you've consulted with your vet, you'll be in great hands.
Hope you don't mind I moved your post here to "Treatment and Recovery" since you're now on that path! Be well and keep us posted, we're cheering you on!
