So happy to read this, Mary! Yay to great firsts !!!! Way to go Blaze, taking one step at a time, or as mom says, baby steps!! But definitely in the right direction, and ultimately to complete healing and total enjoyment of life again!
Give your handsome boy a New Years hug for me!

Isn't this THE best feeling when you see some sparkle back and some normal routine return! I think Hap o y Hannah took almost five weeks before she actually slept on her incision side! I remember how happy I was!
Here's to a return to normlacy....with even more sparkle than before!!!
Extra cheek scratches for Blaze from us!

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
Thanks all for the encouraging words. Blaze heard the support and this morning gave me his remaining front paw to hold. Essentially sitting on only his two back legs for a few seconds!
I know it's early. I know it will take time. I know he is 11 and not a young pup. My only real concern right now is his lack of appetite. He eats one meal, supper, and is not really interested in breakfast. He eats a high quality home cooked diet, Ogilvies Anti Cancer recipe. I know I am better off keeping him lean. He has always weighed about 70-75 lbs and is a very tall, 26 inch golden.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.

Mary: so glad to know Blaze is recovering well. My Johnnie is also a front-amp male Golden, and also likes to sleep with the incision side down. Perhaps it is easier for them to get up from this position.
Regarding appetite, for sure it is better to keep him lean. Also, because their physical activity is reduced during this post-op, less appetite is sort of normal. If he is eating, all is well.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet. Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues. Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle. October 17: started having seizures. Taking fenobarbital for seizures. April 18: started prednisone.
This is great to hear about Blaze!!!! Keep on the good fight. If he's not eating, perhaps add some chicken stock to his food... that worked for my Shelby!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Hi Mary & Blaze! What a great way to start the new year!
Thats great news & doesn't it give us a sense of magical feelings deep within when we see them thrive! Even a new party trick giving one paw whilst sitting well on the back end! Super clever Blaze Keep those tricks coming!
I tended to (& still do on not so good appetite lazy days) cook favourites & sometimes a few until my Sandy gives in to the temptation! Knowing what gets those taste buds tantalising is a great start! I even hand feed Sandy some days (she has learnt how to eat from a fork with tin food-very lady like now heehee) I know she perhaps won't starve herself & also know that as she is not so active as before, like Daniella says above, that's normal as the body uses the energy differently rather than physically exerting themselves to build that appetite we have been so used to them having.
Sandy too laid on her incision site (that worried me) but it is fine as sometimes cools the area down to relieve it our vet said.
Keep up the good caring & treasure every step forwards!!
High paw five from Sandy to Blaze!
Also whilst I think of it...have you thought about bowl height? We bought a heightened bowl box which raises the bowls from the floor which Sandy eats from more comfortably (around those odd lazy days).
There is a page Jerry has about feeding stations which may help. I caught this on the paw shoes link recently updated.
Just a thought if you haven't tried raising bowls to see if that helps as it may be as simple as that that needs consideration perhaps.
When we went away we couldn't fit ours in the car so took a foldable kids step x2 (1 for water & 1 for food) which was cheap & great as did the same job plus folded down to fit in the car!
Hi Dawnie and Sandy. Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I raised his bowls weeks before his surgery and try to entice him with cold cuts in his bowl. While I can hand feed him I prefer not to because he has been know to be food aggressive. He is just plain sleepy. I cut back on tramadol and reduced the GABA dose to 200 mg a say. Both meds cause drowsiness. His appointment to remove the staples is Monday morning. I will talk to the surgeon.
Mary
