Our dog had his leg removed 5 days ago. He is healing well and i am so thankful for all the support i have gotten from this site and it's users. He started twitching today when he sleeps. Not just in the hind region, but all over including his front paws. Is this normal? does anyone know what causes this?
Hi Kathy,
When you say twitching all over, is there any vocalization like pain sounds, or is this a "chasing rabbits" kind of twitching when he's sleeping?
It is very normal for a stump site to twitch. Even five years after our Wyatt Ray 's amputation, his still twitches. No big deal, he isn't in pain, it's just that the brain is still trying to tell the leg to do something so it sends out signals through the nerves. This is why phantom limb pain happens in amputees, the brain doesn't realize the leg is gone and signals get crossed. Obviously I'm not a doctor but that's the simplest way of putting it.
As for all-over body twitching, I would only be concerned if she's showing pain indicators like crying out. If otherwise he's fine, then he's probably just super happy to be feeling good and chasing rabbits again in his sleep!

I'd take it as a good sign that there isn't pain or whimpering (maybe he's having really good dreams with his pain meds!) but maybe check with your vet to be safe. You might also want to post here in the Ask a Vet Forum.
Good luck!
Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.
Glad his recovery is going so well...and it's still early on too!
Yeah, sounds like everything's okay if there is no whimpering. And the fact that it's while he's sleeping does sound dream related. The meds could indeed make him dream.of bunnies...or pink elepjhants!
One thing I always tried t o remember to do for Happy Hannah was to scratch for her...scratch where she was no longer able to reach without her leg...also just massage and scratch all.over. Maybe he's dreaming of a good body scratch!
I love his avatar picture! What a sweetie!
Keep us losted.on his journey!
Sending best wishes..

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Hello. It sounds like your pup is doing well. Wahoo! Molly J had also been twitching a lot in her sleep. However, it seems to have decreased greatly since she's off her meds. She's not usually an opiate user. So I suspect that the meds played a big role in that. Here's to continuing progress with your pup.
