Hi everyone. I have a 15 yr old female dog who recently got her left hind amputated due to hip dislocation and no elasticity to hold it back in. She had her amputation about two weeks ago and since then, it is daily struggle to get her to urinate. Number 2 she is fine with, but number 1 she will wait all day and then just as we go to take her to the vet she will go or wait until we get to the vet. Did anybody else have trouble with their dogs urinating after amputation? Any suggestions?

Hi Emck75, I'm sorry to hear your pup is having problems going potty. Is it possible that it may be painful for her to squat to go No 1? Skye, my 13 year old husky has her amputation two months ago and going pee is still as issue for her. She has giving me a some scares, two weeks out of surgery she did not go No 1 for 18 hours, we ended up at the vet , when they were palpitating her abdomen, she went released her urine, it was a river! I was afraid something was wrong or there was a blockage, thankfully all was fine, she just seemed unwilling to go. It's been trying to figure out what her new normal is. Before surgery, potty breaks ran like clock work and now, it's lots of encouragement, many times taking her out on the sling only for her not wanting to go, such a stubborn naughty husky! There are times she also refuses to go outside. Skye does have arthritis on her hips and in the lower lumbar sacral area a,d is currently on gabapantin, amitriptyline and adequan (we just up'ed her adequan frequency). We started doing in home exercises three weeks ago to strengthen her remaining hind leg and it has helped her in keeping herself up, she still needs assistance getting around, and I think it has also helped iher confidence and is just a little more willing to go outside to try going potty.
Hang in there. It's hard and emotionally draining but hang in there with us. I guess these older babies just go a little slower.
