Trouble had her seven month ampuversary, and five month post chemo check-up today. Her white blood count is about 1/3 of where it should be. She had been on two consecutive rounds of predisone for the stubborn hotspot, and finished the last dose 3 days ago. Dr F thinks the prednisone is the reason for the drop. We are to watch her closely for any sign of infection, and get her in pronto if necessary. She goes back for a blood draw on the 17th for a comparison. Hopefully the numbers will head back up. He did point out that it had never been the same since they started tracking it. If it doesn't go up on the next check, he will need to start looking for the source.
Otherwise she is fine. Heart and lungs are strong. He isn't planning to do anymore post chemo chest x-rays unless she develops a cough, or if he has to start searching for the source of an infection.
We are blessed each day we spend with her on borrowed time.

Dear Shanna and Trouble,
Good luck with Trouble's white blood count. I'm sorry I don't have any advise or words of wisdom. Please just know that Trouble in my heart and prayers.

Good luck with Trouble! Some dogs just run a little low on their white count so it could be okay. Is it below 5000? I usually see prednisone increase the white cell count but anything is possible. If she is feeling fine then there is probably nothing to worry about. Any fever?

Shanna,I guess when it comes to dealing with cancer, a check up result like this still isn't too bad, all things considered. Sounds like Trouble is holding her own. Keep it up girlfriend!

It is 3600, the lowest it has been. I'm a little bummed about it, but still refuse to allow myself to worry until the next check.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it here or not, but she seems to be stumbling a lot. With Duke in the house now, she is a little more active than she had been. Maybe that has something to do with it? Her appetite is good, and she seems as alert as she ever has been. She can still run, albeit in short bursts. No fever. Maybe the summer is just kicking her butt. It is REALLY hot here.

I'm betting it's the heat. I didn't do very well in that kind of weather either. Man, it's really tiring when you're hopping around on three legs, in fur, on a 100 degree day!

Shanna,
Good luck with Trouble. Our prayers are with you and we are thinking positive thoughts for Trouble. Don't worry until you have to. Summer can really get to dogs and we really noticed that Bonnie did not like the heat after her chemo. Even months after, she still wanted low temperatures and a fan. Is Trouble drinking enough water? Prednisone really makes them drink and go, so if she is not drinking enough, that could make her weaker. Bonnie liked crushed ice in her water and would chase it around. It encouraged her to drink more.
Our thoughts are with you.

Thank you guys for all the encouragement. I described Dr F's response as guardedly optimistic. I think that pretty much describes me too. I just feel like I'm in a 10 day holding pattern. Very discouraging as you all know!

Shanna,
Hang in there. I know it is frustrating because we want all the answers and we want them NOW. Just keep thinking those good thoughts that everything will work itself out.
I will continue to keep those good thoughts coming your way.
You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Trouble
How are you doing?
I have always got hot spots but since i have been sick they seem to take a very long time to go and get really big, Mum and Dad used to use Ilium Neocort - Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory,anaesthetic skin emollient cream which has worked great but they wanted to use something natural while i am sick so we came across a product called: PROPOLIS (Tincture) it is a 100% Natural - made from bees (Just test first to make sure your dog isn't allergic to bees) which had her hot spot cleared up in 3 days it was awesome... 2 Drops was mixed into 50-70ml of Hot water (not cold) you will see it will sit on the top of the water this is fine let cool and dab on hot spot with cotton wool 3 times a day...It works wonders, stinks a bit but is great..Most health shops sell it. Mum and Dad are going to continue to use this from now on at least it is Natural...
Mum and Dad have been trying me on K9-Immunity and Transfer Factor with Milk Thistle now for about 2 weeks i have had my fourth round of chemo and have had a low white count from the first Chemo Treatment but I was tested the other day and my white count was back to normally!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure if this is just a fluke or not but just seems strange that it has been low all this time and since taking these it has suddenly gone back to normall...It is worth a try anyway good for there immunity anyway may stop some of the infections.
Good luck....Hope you feel better soon.
Keep us posted.

Montana & Mum (or Dad?), thank you for taking the time to share. I will have to give the Propolis a try. It seems Trouble starts out with just a little allergy bump and then turns into a big hot spot. They have had to shave a big place on her side to get her healed up, but now she is licking and chewing around the edges of the shaved area. Grrr..
Because of her many allergies, I've been reluctant to try the Transfer Factor, but may it is time to see if she can tolerate it. I know it sounds terrible, but I hate to spend the money on something else she cannot use. I've had to abandon just about anything over the counter we've tried.
A friend of mine has a great mushroom concoction she uses for ther dog who has fought lymphoma. It has been one of the factors in keeping him going for a couple of years now, but I'm afraid to try it too! I'm just going to have to overcome my phobia and give some of the good stuff a try.
