Leo is having his amputation tomorrow and I am so nervous about it. I know he will do great. He hasn't been limping but I know that doesn't mean he isn't in pain. I feel much better about the fact that after the surgery he will not be in any pain.
I was wondering about what is going to happen when I have to leave him alone for the first time. He is coming home Friday and I will be with him all weekend. Plus I took Monday and Tuesday off from work to be with him. I am also in school and I have a test Tuesday so my husband is coming home early to stay with Leo. Unfortunately, I have to go back to work Wednesday and Leo is going to be alone. I was thinking about bringing him to my vet for doggie daycare during the day at least until the stiches come out. I am scared he is going to mess with the incision when no one is around. Any suggestions?
My vet also did not recommend chemo but I was thinking about doing it anyway. The only thing that concerns me is the cost. How much, on average, does it usually cost for chemo?
I will keep you all updated on Leo's surgery.

Hi Leo!
I'm Bandit and just became a Tripawd on the 11th. I came home on Saturday with my mommy and daddy. Mommy was with me all day Sunday as daddy had to go to work. On Monday Daddy was home and Mommy was at work. On Tuesday, Mommy and Daddy were at work. Mommy put an e-collar on me (Radar dish, YUCK!). She did come home for lunch to give me my meds, take me for a walk and make sure I was OK. She then went back to work and came home 3 hours later. I did just fine. The side doors to the house were open so I could go out, get water and do my doggy business. When Mommy came home from work at the end of the day, she found me laying in a shady spot in the grass just enjoying the afternoon.
You will do just fine Leo. Yes, your Mommy and Daddy will be very concerned about your welfare, but we are strong! I started walking on late Sunday morning! Mommy was floored! Now when I get up she has a hard time from keeping me from running off and acting silly with my brother and sisters. When I am by myself, I like to walk around, but I do like to just lay around where it is comfortable until Mommy and Daddy gets home to spoil me. You'll do fine, buddy. As much as I hate the radar dish on me, it does keep my from licking my stitches when my pawrents are not around to monitor me.

I'd say watch Leo closely the days you are home. If he doesn't bother the stitches then, he probably won't while you're gone. The meds may keep him doped up enough to just rest all day. And by the time you ween him off the meds, his incision should be healed enough to not worry about it. If necessary, a cone my work. I never bothered my stitches...

wishing u well for your surgery tomorrow. I don't know if u have a lot of hardwood floors but if u do you'll need to put something down so he can't slip hardwood floors are dangerous for three legs. keep us informed.

Leo is out of surgery and doing well. I can't even explain how relieved it am! He will be home sometime tomorrow. I am really nervous to see him.
Dawn - we have Pergo floors in our living room, which are just as slippery as real hardwood. We are heading out this evening to get some runners or an area rug. We have slate flooring in the kitchen and since it is natural stone, there is much more grip there. The bedrooms are carpet.

Yipee! Great news! Remember, be strong and a good pack leader. He will need all the confidence and love he can get.
Be careful with the slate floors right after surgery, you'd be surprised at how tricky they can be for Tripawds who are just getting used to things.
We can't wait to hear about his homecoming. Good luck!
