…oops, I mean ravenous.

I'm not sure what's going on with him.  An hour after he eats, he's eyeballing the food bin again.  We can't step into the kitchen without him parking on the threshold giving us the "I'm starving and you are so mean to me" stare.  He starts bugging Rick to feed him an hour or more before supper time.

He's been on metronomics (12 mg cytoxan, 100 mg Rimadyl and fish oil every day) for about three months.  So I don't know if this is a side effect, or if it's a competitive thing with Sam, or he's just acting weird because things are weird on the home front.  He was pushing Sam out of the way to eat her food but we put a stop to that.  But I'm hardly ever home and I think that bugs him – however, this really started before the current crisis, it's just getting worse.  I suspect it is Sam, this was his kingdom for over 3 years til SHE came along.  We're past the worst of the monkeybutt puppy stage and he does like to play with her.  But he's kind of insecure (not like Dakota Dawg!), maybe sensitive is more accurate.  It took him a long, long time to get okay with us after we got him at 14 months old, and he definitely likes his routine.  Or maybe it's his age (5).  I dunno, I'm out of ideas.

Any thoughts?  We don't want him to get fat and he's up to 65 lbs – not bad but I prefer 60.

And ravishing to lotsa gals I'm sure!

Is he taking anything else as far as meds or supplements? I know that prednisone can cause this but I've never heard of metronomics causing extreme hunger. Have you talked to your vet about it?

Some dogs experience muscle wasting when battling cancer, does he look thinner? Doesn't sound like it. If 60 pounds is what he needs to be then stick with it. Fat-free snacks like green beans, celery, carrots, etc. may help.

OMD, you've totally described Rio's appetite, too. A half hour or so, somedays more, prior to dinner time, she starts sitting next to me, staring, doing what we call "Whistler's Mother," and I know it's because she wants it to be time for dinner. She practically takes your hand off when you give her a treat, too. And she used to be my picky eater, my hunger striker. We think it's probably a residual effect from her Cushings, even though we've mostly gotten that under control.

How's his water consumption? Normal or increased?

I don't have any words of wisdom, since Abby is SO not a chow hound, but I will say that I've seen no difference in her appetite since she's been on the MP (she gets 15 mg of Cytoxan + Piroxicam every day - btw, interesting... I notice she gets more Cytoxan than Tate, even though she is only 45lbs...??).

And, yes, Abby says Tate is very ravishing. She sends him some kisses. Hope you figure out what the deal is,

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. we can't offer any help...but gayle says, if she weren't sammy's girl (and she is forever sammy's girl), she'd agree that tate is indeed very ravishing.  i just found out gayle and sammy like steamed brussel sprouts...maybe that's an option too??  good luck, and if you figure out an easy diet, i personally need to know!

BTW, my chubsters have all lost weight since I started making them "dog soup." I feed them a combination of kibble (either Acana Pacifica or Taste of the Wild Grasslands) and fresh cooked. The "soup" is made with meat -- chicken, liver (beef or chicken), beef, lamb (what's ever cheapest), sardines, white fish and marrow bones. I add whatever veggies I have available -- green beans, kale, chard, squash, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc. and cover with water. I simmer this until the meat is done, and then let it cool. Then I removed the meat and chop it coarsely. The veggies and broth are blended with a hand blender, and then I throw the meat back in. I serve about equal amounts of kibble and this at each meal. Sometimes I put cottage cheese in, as well. It looks gross and is kinda stinky to make, but the girls LOVE it. And even though I'm feeding them half again more volume of food, they've all slimmed down nicely on this mix.

Dog soup sounds like a doglicious dinner. My pups don't need to lose weight...but Rumbles doesn't have the best appetite, so maybe I could use the dog soup to encourage him to eat a bit more.

Poor Tate...It's hard to stay "Ravishing" if he is always "Ravenous"!

That's really a head scratcher!   Maybe it is competition?  Maybe he is hungry?  I know Comet begged non-stop from 8pm to 10pm every night.  And she demanded her food at feeding times but she wasn't really dying of hunger - just spoiled.

If you can get him to eat celery - it has almost zippo calories and it's good for chewing which takes time to eat.  We gave a stalk every night to Comet and Rugby and followed it up with a carrot.  That kept some of the begging down a bit.

 Here's hoping it's behavioral!

Oh my darling Tate - you will always be ravishing to me 😉 I always try to eat more in the Fall too so I can put on some winter padding. My pawrents don't understand it either. They usually try to trick me by giving me just a little bit of food to placate me. Sometimes it works. I bet you are just afraid that silly old Sammy will steal all your food.

Love, Ginger

Ravishing Ginger, you are right, winter padding is wonderful!  Especially cuz one time one of my silly peeps (who shall remain unnamed) left me outside when it was -10 and I finally had to bark at the door so they would let me back in.  Sometimes humans are just so dumb.

But did you read that recipe for Dog Soup!  Man oh man oh man is Rio lucky or WHAT!  I'm trying to figure out how to use the printer so I can place this in a strategic location...like right on top of my food bin!  Maybe my pawrents will get the hint!  On the other hand (given the locked out at -10 episode), maybe not.  I might have to find my way to Washington.  I bet Rio's mom would feed me right.  Wanna come with me?  We could have a cross-country adventure!  I'm getting pretty good at driving now, I'll take Dad's truck.

Love,

Tate

The old timers are going to smile when I tell you this, but Trouble got to be a real chow hound and was starving ALL the time. She didn't just ask for dinner, she DEMANDED dinner. She would bark and spin, and get louder and louder until I fed her.

Try green beans. It gives them some bulk without many calories. You can use canned (I always used unsalted), or frozen. I typically gave her a half can with her meals and if she acted hungry in between, I gave her some more.
