I'm happy to hear Kender made it home and seems to be doing well. My Mona (front leg amputation cat) didn't need to wear a cone and only scratched at the drain. I found cleaning her with a wet baby face cloth seemed to either ease the itch or distract her. I also brushed her to distract her. Mind you Mona loves to be brushed, I know not all cats love it like her. Take care of yourself too.

I also wanted to comment about the litter. I bought "Yesterdays News" and it didn't go well with Mona. I won't tell you all the grief I went through and all the places she peed (NOT in the litter box). I tried sprinkling some of grain kitty litter I had been using on top - that didn't work. Finally I went to garbage and got the old, somewhat used, litter I disposed of and she then used the litter box. Maybe it's like introducing new food? I hope Kender is more accepting of new litter!

This rings true with my experiences as well. My two cats share a little box, and over the years, I've tried to switch up the litter to various types of more environment-friendly, cat-friendly, cleaner greener dust free litter. They have never responded well to any of it at all (especially my other cat). They've even turned down that super expensive walnut shell stuff, and end up finding other spots in the house to go.

When we were planning for the amputation, I read about changing the litter, but I decided against it for my own situation, as I knew it would probably be an issue for my cats. Also, I wanted to keep his surroundings, our routines and habits as normal as possible around here. Indeed we all know that most cats generally don't like too much change. I did dump the litter box, wash and scrub it well, and put entirely fresh new clean litter in there, though. And while his incision was still fresh for the the first week, I cleaned the box several times a day, and every time I saw them use it (instead of the usual once a day).

Love Vinny and his human, KJ! <3 xox

Having everyone's feline-specific pre and post-op experiences here is SO helpful, thank you everyone for sharing!
