I'm Wendy and my standard poodle boy, Jody is having surgery today, r. rear amputation from osteosarcoma. The vet seems great, and he was right with me as I told him my utmost concern is Jody's pain and anxiety management. He said Jody will come home with codeine and carprofen. I don't know if that will be in addition to his Gabapentin - I need to ask.
I looked at the post about the best and worst pain meds and didn't see codeine listed.

Hi Wendy and Jody, welcome. I'm sorry you had to join our club but so glad you found us. Good job doing your research and asking the vet about pain management . Codeine is sometimes used so I wouldn't worry too much at this point as long as other pain medications are provided. As you've seen here, Gabapentin is the most common since it works on nerve pathways. Jody may also come home with a 3-day drug that was injected at the end of surgery ("Nocita"). Ask your vet to make sure.

Codeine is a stronger and more reliable pain medication than tramadol; many dogs do not have a receptor for tramadol so it only gives spotty relief for acute pain. It may help some dogs with chronic pain (arthritis). Both drugs are quite safe although codeine may make your dog a little more stoned/sedated.
