When I got up to make the dogs' dinner tonight, Holly got off of her bed and hopped over to the kitchen...I was turned away from her, so didn't see if anything happened, but she suddenly let out a horrible yelp/scream....she was standing where she had been when I last saw her and I didn't hear her moving at all, so I think that she was just standing there. We looked her over and couldn't see anything or figure out any clue as to what it was, except that she started standing/walking with her head low - either even with or below her shoulders. She was able to walk outside and squat to pee, then happily ate her dinner, but continued to keep her head low. She laid back down on her bed, and clearly had some difficulty or felt some pain while trying to lie down, but has been pretty much ok ever since except for one short cry. She just got up again to go for her bedtime walk and is still holding her head down/hunching.
I don't see any twitching in the incision area, and she hasn't been licking at it or anything. We're almost 5 weeks post amp.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? It seems odd that phantom pain would cause the change in posture, and I don't know if it would be likely for it to suddenly turn up after this long. What about a back or neck spasm? I've been thinking of doing acupuncture and/or chiropractic, so maybe now is the time to try that....?

Oh gosh. I don't know. I agree that it does sound like she may have done something to her back or neck but I'm no an expert.
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. seems one of our big boys, sammy had trouble with his neck - he would get his vertibrae in a 'kink' as i remember. if you do a search on neck in 'ask a vet', you might find some answers from pam, our resident vet. sammy's story is under fightingforsammy i believe, and elizabeth went to great lengths to help him get un-kinked.
maybe alternate warm heat and ice?? our jane used to get this in her upper and sometimes lower spine, and we had enormous success with acupuncture. time and rest might be enough, but if not, i'd see if the vet might recommend some muscle relaxers.

OH GOSH!
Yes! I had it happen before....scared the bejeebies out of me! (still makes me shudder) Comet was getting up from laying down. It was her neck.
But in my case, I had just done a wellness xray about 10 days prior. She had no symptoms of anything, I was just doing it. The radiologists said she had diskosponylitis in the neck (infection of the disc). Since it was a partial xray of the neck, we did a better one and it came back fine. So, we all blew it off......UNTIL the scream about 10 days later!
My gut tells me it was a herniated disc and not disko even tho we treated it as disko. But having had one myself in the cervical, damned if they aren't painful initially. (enough to go sit in the ER for 4 hours!)
The best treatment is an NSAID (rimadyl or something similar). And heat and ice therapy like Charon said. It usually gets better once you get the inflammation under control.
I hope that helps. But I'd check with your vet to be safe.

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
