Today is Jackson's fourth day as a tripawd (we now call him "Tres J"!). His swelling is better and his bruising is starting to progress. I think whatever blood poolage he is/was going to get has peaked and we're on our way to clearing his bruises. Still no leakage, so we're all happy. Tramadol (50mg) and Rimadyl (50mg, an NSAID) and his antibiotic 2x/day.
The only new thing he's doing today is flexing his stump. He'll be resting/sleeping and just prior to passing out or after just waking up, he'll contract his stump repeatedly. Is this Phantom Limb stuff? Is this pain? Is he feeling it out in a safe position? He doesn't make it look like pain, but then again he's not active today so he could be. Thoughts?

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Doggy owners might have more to add but Jill's stump moves and contracts all the time. Not as much as it did the first week, but still a little bit (she's now 20 days post amputation). She never seems to be in any pain, sometimes it does seem to Blake her up though. I suspect it's just the nerves regenerating.
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Sassy does that a lot too. She isn't in pain. The other night she was dreaming and running with all 3 legs and her stump just like she had all 4 legs. They still have all those muscles too. We have only been an amputee for 46 days so everything is pretty new still. Glad to hear Jackson is doing so well.

What a great recovery!
It does sound like this is normal nerve reaction to the missing limb. Phantom pain is when they yell, scream or bark for n o apparent reason, it does sound quite painful. To me, that doesn't sound like phantom pain . Keep in mind that it takes a while for the brain to realize the leg is missing. Oftentimes we see our Wyatt Ray 's stump twitching. He's not in pain, but usually just trying to use the leg to scratch on that side. That's when we know he needs a good scratch!

Maggie's little stump moved a lot for the first few months. She would often try and scratch her chin with her missing back leg. Left chin and face became my responsibility to scratch if she needed me- otherwise the furniture or her little sister worked. It would also twitch when she slept- even if the rest of her was still. None of these things were painful for her- and she would have let me know! After a few months she stopped trying to scratch her chin- and the only time I noticed the stump twitching was during dreams.

Zeus' nubbin also twitched, especially when he was asleep. Never seemed to bother him at all. Glad to hear recovery is going well!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Thanks, folks, for the comfort. Jackson's stump keeps twitching and contracting. He's not in pain, so we're OK with it. It was just a new "symptom" that day and we were unsure what was going on. As always, you all are so helpful and supportive!
