Hey!
It’s been a week since Sol’s amputation surgery and I took him on a few short walks in his strollers. He did really well, so today I took him on a longer walk but he was very excited because it wasn’t were we normally walk. So he got out of the stroller a lot and walked more than usual since he became a tripawd, I noticed he’s limping a lot and his back legs seem weaker or sore. I feel guilty for taking him on a longer walk today, but is he just sore from the walk today? Is the limping/soreness normal?

Hey congrats on the one week ampuversary! That's awesome! I'm so glad he's had enough progress to take him out and about.

Yeah it sounds like he overdid it. The limping and soreness is normal for dogs who do too much too soon but please please please don't beat yourself up OK? You didn't know anything would happen, he was having so much fun! It's a learning curve to figure out what dogs are capable of after surgery. The Tripawds Foundation is so enthused about getting a Tripawd into rehab therapy that we will pay for your first rehab visit , because these experts can evaluate our Tripawd and educate us about how to help them stay strong and injury free.

If you have any pain medication left, ask your vet if you can give him some for a day or two. You can also try heat and ice therapy, and gentle, very gentle, massage. And while I'm not a vet, I would also give him a day or two off and then do 1/4 of the activity he did today. That's what a therapist told us when we described how we did the very same thing with our Jerry (yep, we all live and learn from this recovery thing!).

Let us know how he's doing OK? He will probably bounce back before he's even ready but stay strong with a little tough love and encourage him to take it slow. You can do it!

Thank youu 😩 I truly appreciate the your comforting words. I will do the ice therapy and keep him rested for the next few days. I do have pain meds left, so I’ll ask my vet!

And omg free first rehab visit !? That’s amazing, I will look into that for sure. Thanks for all you do, I will update on Sol’s progress.

I know Sol thought this little adventure was great fun!  Yeah, as Jerry said, it's soooo easy for dogs to overdo during recovery,  especially if they are star6 to feel better.

A couple days rest and lots of good massage with some pain meds should help. Ask about Rimady too.

Take it easy Sol!  You'll soon be throu all this recovery stuff!
