This is my first post. Slick 9 years old, 1/2 lab & 1/2 weimariner had his back leg amputated last week . The stiches have come loose and the vet said it will be okay. We are treating woth meds and spray. We are trying to walk him with a towel and he just dosen't want to use his front legs. He is eating. Any advice?
Hi Tom and Slick, welcome to Tripawds. I hope you don't mind I moved your post here, I didn't want it to get lost in the one where you originally posted.
I'm sorry that Slick lost his leg. Why is he now a Tripawd?
One week isn't a long time for a dog to recovery and many have a lot of ups and downs. What kind of pain meds is he on? Pain medications can make dogs really lethargic and not want to walk around. That's not unusual. But what concerns me is how you mentioned his stitches are loose. Has your vet actually seen them? Is there an infection in the area? Usually when this happens a dog must go back to have the stitches re-done.
If he's eating and eliminating that is a good sign. His mobility is probably just limited because of the recent surgery and medications but it's something you want to keep your vet in the loop about. Also, have you just tried letting him walk without assistance? A lot of dogs don't want the help, that's not unusual. Maybe you want to see how much he's willing to do on his own for a day or so?

All in all it sou D's like your pup is doing pretty good for just one week out..Yeah, my Happy Hannah did much better once I stopped trying to help her with a towel sling----pretty much after the first day or two out she wanted nothing to do with any help!
Do you have stairs or is Slick using a ramp? Stairs can p.any havoc on stitches sometimes.
Sorry computer cutting off......some larger dogs with a few years on them need a little ore patience in adjusting......but a week is still very soon....will. back in later...cutting off

Welcome to our group Tom and Slick. Hang in there as it seems it takes at least two weeks before you really start to see the dog you know. That also depends on how long he will need to be on pain meds and that varies from dog to dog. We're here to listen and help when we can.
Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
