Hi Everyone,

Our 5 1/2 month old GSD Serge, has now been a tripawd for one month. About two weeks ago I felt a lump in his right shoulder area.. Not too obvious when he is lying down. He is in no discomfort whatsoever when the lump is prodded and generally "interfered" with. We took him to the vet last week, and she could not say anything definite, and he went back for an X-Ray today.. She managed to get a fair sized needle in and extract some tissue from the centre of the "lump" and sent it off to pathology. Called us about and hour ago, with the lab results. Calcinosis circumscripta, and no abnormal (or "nasty") cells present. She explained that young German Shepherds can be prone to this, but what surprised her was that the "lump" is not actually attached to the bone, and is in the deeper tissue layers, in a most unusual place. She wants another X-Ray in 6 months, to compare the size. She does not particularly want to do surgery, because it is in an area that has a lot of nerves and tendons, etc. He will be growing for the next 12 months at least, and she is not concerned at the moment, but wants us to keep an eye on it.. Other than that, he is doing well, and adapting to his new "configuration"

Have a good weekend folks

Richard

Poor guy! Im glad he's doing so well, and happy 1 month ampuversary Serge!!! Today is also Domino's one month marker too. It seems like the hits keep on coming doesn't it lol. Domino just had a scare with his eye this week. It's always something with the furbabies. How is he doing with Raven?

Domino had his left front leg amputate on May 13th 2014 after being hit by a car. He's now living a happy healthy life on three legs :)

Hi Cassie and Domino,

Glad to see Domino is progressing "as well as can be expected !!" .. Raven went back to the breeder, to give both of them some space (and peace) and we are picking her up next week. Play was getting a "tad" too rough at times, and we didn't want Serge to get hurt. He is just arriving at the "butt-head" adolescent stage of, what will be, his long GSD puppyhood. He must have really hurt Raven one day, grabbing at her, because she "clothes-lined" him very quickly. Of course, the foolish puppy fought back, and we had to separate them, because Raven really took exception to this.. After that, it was very quiet for a few days.. The little guy had a real shock.. The problem is that physically he is not so "little" any more (47 Lbs), and even though Raven is still the "mother hen", as he is older (and bigger) she will take exception if he gets to much into her face, or nips her too hard while they are playing. They were still playing happily together with "squeaky" toys, but we thought it best to have a cool off period..

Concerning the calcified "lump".... presumably it becomes a permanent fixture, and if I understood the vet correctly, should not increase in size as he grows older (unless he has too high calcium levels in his blood, which she doesn't believe is the case)..The vet does not want to put him through another round of major surgery, and if we notice that the lump is still growing over the next few weeks, she will run some blood work. But, as she said, he is growing and needs calcium for his bones, but if his blood/calcium is over the top, then it must be reduced..There's the paradox !!

Have a great weekend, and Serge sends Domino his best wishes,

Richard

Well dang, that's a new one, never heard of it, but it sounds pretty benign and shouldn't be a problem?

Kudos to you for being so hands-on with Serge and finding that lump. It pays to be vigilant.

Glad to hear the pack will be reunited soon!

Well Serge, you certainly like to keep everyone on their toes.....including Raven! Raven's showing GSD Serge how to behave around his "elders"! He's one big puppy, that's for sure!

Glad the lump really isn't anything to be concerned about. I know it's almost impossible not to worry sometimes though.

The avatar picture is quite handsome and shows how much he is growing!

Glad to get an update amd to kow recovery has gone so well.
