Roxy has been on Antirobe (antibiotics) for 4 weeks now and her mouth whatever-it-is ("ulceration" on the roof of her mouth - it's a pink sensitive area in her mouth and a bit on her lip) doesn't seem to be getting better. Her jaw shaking continues every so often, and something else strange started happening.
Twice, I noticed her tongue hanging out the side of her mouth while she was resting (mouth closed) and when I get her to look up at me, it stays like that until she (or I) opens her mouth. She's never done this before. Although it's cute, it's kind of worrisome and I wonder if it's related to her mouth thing.
She is in for chemo today and I am hoping to get an update about her mouth, but I am also hoping I don't have to get dentistry involved - I am already stretched to my financial limits, and I don't want to put her through any additional pain.
So I dunno if this is actually a question or not, but just wanted to talk about it because I'm not sure what it is, or what to do about it.

Hmmmmmmmm.....weird. does it seem to bother her at all? Does she have any sharp, broken off tooth that could be irriatig her mouth in anyway?
Clearly the antibiodics didn't do anything so at least you can get her off those.. Seems like there could be something supplement-wise that could help. Mouth ulcerations in humans, canker sores, etc. seems like that's lack of vitamin C? Still, if it's not bothering her, I wouldn't worry. I know, when this stupid disease is involved, .......nor worrying? Ha! That's s tall order huh?
As far as the tongue having a mind of it's own........hmmmmmmmmmm. I have had dogs as they become more "senior" have a very "relaxed" tongue as they sleep and, as others in other posts mentioned, the jaw quivering thing.
If you have any holistic vets in your area, I would definitely check them out.
okay, once you get the reassurance that. nothing is going on with that to the........you KNOW we HAVE to have a picture!! I really think it's just a dog resting well and hard!! Especially since you've just noticed it while she's sleeping.

I don't have any ideas either, as we've never experienced anything like that. Just want to say that whatever it is, I hope it's easily treatable. Please update when you can. In the meantime, we'll be sending Roxy positive thoughts!

Aww pooor Roxy!
Whenever a condition goes on and on like this, that's when I would take Sally's suggestion and go see a holistic practitioner. I love holistic medicine for certain conditions because practitioners see other aspects of the disease that traditional medicine doesn't. Although the upfront cost can take a bite out of your wallet, the treatments are usually less expensive (and physically taxing) than traditional medicine.
The tongue hanging out sounds like it could be related.

Treatment went well yesterday, Roxy is a bit wobbly as she usually is after a visit to the vet. One of her vets thinks it's because she expends so much energy while she's there. Apparently she gets really excited and barks at the other animals.
Funny thing, I went to a fundraising show with bands last night and one of Roxy's oncologists (oncologist-in-training) was there, so i talked to her. I was feeling sad about Roxy all day, and seeing her made me feel better. She said Roxy is one of her favourite patients and she had just seen her that day.
They extended her prescription of Antirobe for another few weeks since the mouth thing doesn't seem to be better.
I started looking for holistic vets in the area, there seem to be at least a couple.

How cool you got to talk to her onco. You definitely want to stay in contact with them while you seek out other options. Hopefully they and the holistic doc you find can work together to figure this out.

I don't remember if you talked about this before- but chemo in people sometimes leads to mouth sores. Sorry if you already know that. The people that I know who had this happen didn't heal until after chemo was done. Did your onco mention mouth sores as a possible side effect?
As far as the tongue hanging out the side- it might be related. Maggie had a tumor in her mouth and she started hanging her tongue out the side of her mouth. Of course I'm not saying you are dealing with a tumor. But if her mouth is uncomfortable it could explain the tongue migration.
