Hello everyone!
I could not find a category that fits this question best. I apologize if this in in the wrong one. Our little Otto man is a few months shy of turning two and he's been a member of the family since he was five months old, two months post amputation. His amputation was due to a bad fracture that wasn't repairable. He is my first tripawd...and my first dog so I have twice as much information to learn when it comes to care and health. Anywho, I was just wondering if there are any health concerns I should keep an eye out as he gets older. For example, I'm concerned for his body structure. As all tripawds I've met with a front amputation, they take on this football player stance with their remaining leg in the middle of their chest. I get concerned that this may cause harm or possible deformities. Anyone have experience with this?
I've already expected hip and joint issues which is why I started him on supplements. He gets sick of them after awhile so I've gone through many different kinds(I.e-tablets, soft treats, etc) and just haven't found the perfect one he will take every day!
Good question! We've moved it here to the Ongoing Care forum for you.
Some certified rehab vets we've met suggest not using hip & joint supplements until an actual need arises to prevent pups from building up a resistance.
The best thing to prevent issues down the road is to keep Otto fit and trim. Weight management, regular exercise, stretching, massage and hydrotherapy can all help.
