Henry came home on Tuesday on Buprenorphine twice a day. Tomorrow morning is his last dose. Part of me is saying that my vet knows what she's doing, but another part is saying, "hey, you get your leg cut off and 4 days worth of pain meds doesn't seem appropriate". Is this normal, or does it seem short to anyone who has been through this? Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Dawn!  I just went back to Jill's blog to look how long she was on the buprenorphine for....exact same thing, four days, twice a day.  She was JUST FINE.  It seems from my speaking with the doggy folk around here that the dogs stay on pain meds for longer, I'm not quite sure why, but according to what we were sent home with, Henry should do ok!  I'm sure if he seems in any pain  you can call the vet for more.

Hope that helps!

Erica

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Wow! As Jill said, the pain meds for dogs usualy goes on for two weeks, so etimes loger, i dogs Tramadol amd/or Gabapentin are usually the drugs of choice.

But yeah, I'm like you, Henry's leg is chopped off and you're taking his pain meds away? And, again as Jill said, you can get back on it right away...or taper it off over a few more days.

Glad Henry is home and doing well. And it keeps getting better!

Hugs and kitty kisses to yoj!

I'm so glad Erica was here to share Jill's experience with you! But I do agree; you know your cat best. If he seems like he's in pain, ask for a longer pain management program. Your vet doesn't live with him or see how he is at home.

I would say average for our vet hospital is five days, depending on the patient and what type of surgery. If someone calls after their five days and tells us they think their kitty may still be painful, we just refill some more medication. We would rather have someone call for a refill than get stuck with a bunch of medication they may not need and that they cannot return. Buprenex isn't cheap!
