As you all know, they found 3 mets on Cadence's lungs 10 days ago. For the most part she has had really good days, except for today. I got home from work and she has been coughing more than usual. We have plans to go to Lake Tahoe on Monday for the night. We will come home Tuesday. The elevation at Lake Tahoe is 6200 feet. Im worried that since the air is thinner this may complicate her breathing. Its one of Cadence's favorite places to go. We want her to play in the snow while she is still able to. This would make her so happy. I called our oncologist and he told me it would be fine, but just in case, know where the nearest vet is, which of course I had already checked out.
I was just wondering what other people's advice would be or if they have had experience with this. Come Monday, if she is not having a good day then we wont go. Also, if once we start hitting higher elevation and she shows any signs of breathing difficulty, we will turn around and come home. I just don't want to make things worse for her or cause her any pain.
“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.” ― Milan Kundera
I'd think that thinner air would be harder for her, but you never know! She may get so much joy out of it that it could be worth it. Do you have cough medicine for her, in case? You are a loving and devoted mom, so it's clear that Cadence is your number 1 priority. I say, go for it, go slowly and watch her. For her sake, I hope you can make it. Playing in that snow in one of her favorite places sounds magical. Keep us posted!
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Hmmm. Trying to think if we took Abby to visit my Mom (she lives at 5000 ft) after her mets got bad... I don't think we did, so can't really say from experience if it will bother Cadence. It sounds like a lovely idea and she'll be happy to be there. It also sounds like you have a good plan in place (turning around if she seems in distress, etc.) so I hope the trip works out and you have a fabulous, memorable time with her there!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Oh go! My people and I traveled all around the Rockies at elevations up to 12,000 ft when I had bad Mets and it wasn't a problem at all. You can see a lot of these pics in our photo gallery and see how much fun we had, the best times ever! I think maybe a few times I was a little slower but we just took more breaks.
I hope you have a ball! Go, take lots of pix and have FUN!
