My dog Twitch, who is a five month old blue heeler, is currently undergoing surgery. The surgeon had to remove his back left leg, perform spinal and pelvis surgery, and put his back right leg back in its socket and put a cast on it because it is broken. I feel as though this is a lot for such a young dog, but I know it is necessary. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for how I should go about recovery andtraining  when he gets home? Are there any books I should be reading? I am sure the vet will give me a slew of informtion when I go get him, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I was wondering whether I should let him be around other dogs or not when he gets back home. Thank you!

Josh, thanks so much for joining us here at Tripawds. We hope Twitch came through surgery with flying colors. Since he's a puppy, we're betting he did!

Twitch has the advantage of youth on his side. Plus, no cancer, right? Wow, you can't ask for a better chance at a complete recovery than that!

We suggest that you read our Top Ten Questions posts here and here. That's a good place to start. Check out our Health Tips page too.

We'd recommend taking it easy around other dogs the first few weeks, not because they'll treat him any differently, but just so that he doesn't overdo it and hurt himself around his incision. You'll be surprised at how dogs don't know how to slow themselves down so they can heal, and it's up to you to keep an eye on him to make sure he gets enough rest to get well quickly.

Good luck. We'll be thinking of you, and keep us posted on how he's doing OK?

Thank you so much Jerry for replying to my post. Twitch did come through surgery fine and is doing really good. His surgery was not due to Cancer, he was involved in a bad accident where his back end was smashed by a large weight. According to his veterinarian, he is lucky to have even survived, but as of right now he is doing awesome. Thanks for the tips and I'll get back with you when he gets back home.
