The puppy I posted about yesterday, 6-8 week old with right hind leg amputated yesterday due to severe abuse...he was supposed to go to a foster home but instead he is in his forever home with me now. He is crated and I will do warm compresses on his wound twice daily per my vet. I am giving him pain meds for 2 more days, and he is on Clavamox for infection control. He will get plenty of quiet time and will not be let out of the crate much except for potty breaks. What else am I missing? I will get the book that was recommended. This little guy is so skinny, trying to put the right weight on him but yet keep him lean will be a fine balancing act for a while, until he is an adult.
I look forward to many years of learning and growing with him. Thanks for your help so far...

If you have slippery floors, put lots of non-slip rugs around or consider other traction improvements. Consider getting elevated bowls to help make feeding and drinking easier. And be sure to bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List for the best tips and advice from the forums and News blog .

You might need more than 2 days of pain meds. We used them until the staples and stitches came out, just monitor him closely and if in doubt call your vet! Best wishes on his recovery and CONGRATS.....I love happily furever stories!

That is wonderful news! Make sure you also get lots of rest. Post some pics when you get a chance, and keep us posted on his recovery. You'll be amazed at how well he'll adapt to 3 limbs.

Congrats on getting him home. I may have missed this, but what have you named the little guy?
It's very awesome of you to give him a forever home. What others call 'special needs' dog's I know can sometimes be hard to find homes for. You've done a great thing in making your home his. Ya'll will have years and years of love and fun!
Also, with him still being so young, he'll have no problems adjusting to life on 3 legs.

If you have seen the movie Brave Heart, our boy is named William Wallace after the man in the movie:-) We call him Will for short. Just picked the name this morning. he has the most willing heart...and is a fighter...so William Wallace it is!

AWWWW! Puppy pics in general are AWWW, but 3 legged puppy pictures… 😀
He looks like a bit of golden retriever? I'm so used to seeing pics of amps in older OSA dogs, Will's little zipper looks so small in comparison. I look forward to updates as you get to know him.

what a cutie Will is! And I totally agree with Dawn it is so much more common to see pics of older dogs here , Will just looks like a cute mini version . So sorry he had to become a tripawd though. It looks like he is comfy there and we sure hope to hear how he is doing as he heals!
