Macy is 4 days out from her rear leg amputation. The vet has her on Carprofen (inflammation) and Gabapentin (nerve pain). The gabapentin really makes Macy loopy/confused.  Is gabapentin a common post amputation pain medication? How long do animals usually need pain medicine?

Hi Kim & Macy, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

Why did Macy need an amputation? How old/young is she? And what breed? We're nosy around here 😉 But more info does help us get a clearer picture.

Yes Gabapentin is one of the most common pain management medications for amputation surgery. Check out the link for tons of info about Gabapentin, pain management and what to expect as time goes on.

When you say loopy, what do you mean? Could it be that he's experiencing mobility issues that make him appear wonky?

Or, could it be that he has a pain patch on that's causing him to be dysphoric? It would be a fentanly patch, and it's notorious for causing dogs to see pink elephants. However in some cases, dogs can be extremely sensitive to Gaba and the dosage should be dialed back. Don't change a thing though until you call your vet to let them know about his symptoms.

Once you find the right balance of enough pain meds and comfort, you and Macy will be on a roll. Every dog is a bit different when it comes to pain meds and his might need to be adjusted.

How is he doing otherwise?

Must want to say welcome to you and Macy.  And look forward to some pf the answers to Jerry's questions.

It's still sooooo early in recovery, if her pain is being managed even if she is a little "loopy", that's better than being in pain.   Its major surgery all while trying to adapt to three legs.   It may be that the meds need to be tweaked a little bit, if she's  too drugged, depending  on your reply to some of the questions.

How 'bout eating, drinking, peeing.....all good?  Pooping may take a few days because  of the meds.

Update when you can
