Well, day 3 is off to a great start smile  I worked overnight last night and came home to a bright eyed, tail wagging friend this morning!  He was up and about following the kids around the kitchen as they ate their breakfast.  Went out, did the stairs no problem.  He looks so much better today.  The incision is looking great...almost all the redness that was there yesterday is gone and the small amt of swelling seems to be going down as well.  It's a beautiful day here today so I'm looking forward to taking him out for a potty break a little later and letting him sniff the fresh air and listen to the birds chirpin'!

Good for you, Peyton! I'm so happy that your tail is sharing the love! And if you're following kids while they eat, it sounds like you're interested in what might accidentally hit the floor (or accidentally on-purpose be slipped to you). That's exceptionally good news.

Where do you live that you're having beautiful, bird-chirpin' weather? We're hoping we have spring this year...

Wow, that's great!  We all like bright eyes and wagging tails.  If I had a tail, I'd wag it.

We are in MA and had an exceptionally beautiful day today!! Sunny and 60. We don't have a true spring here either so we love days like these in March! Peyon's appetite has remained the same as preop.....ferocious lol! It's definitely a good sign but a double edged sword as he tends to gain weight easily so we have to be careful.

I'd love insight on tapering his Meds. He's a tough one as he does not complain! He's on tramadol 2 tabs 3xday and gabapentin 200mg 2xday.

Also, what is normal as far as activity goes? I've been encouraging him to walk a few steps further outside each day and he definitely tires quickly. For the most part after the kids leave in the morning he is sleeping between potty trips.

Thanks!

So happy to hear that Peyton is doing this well after only 3 days.  Mackenzie (who's now our Golden angel) didn't do so well following her surgery but after she made the complete recovery she was awesome.   The 2 week recovery period is always the hardest and it's amazing how after the 2 weeks that our tripawds recover so well.  As far as meds go, it's a real balancing act.  Sometimes the pain meds have the same symptons as being in pain so you really need to monitor this closely as you don't want to overmedicate but at the same time you don't want them to be in pain.   Tramadol has a tendency to make them feel out of it so be careful - Mackenzie experienced loss of appetite and listlessness for several days (looking back she was probably overmedicated which I didn't know about at the time.) It's important to make sure they're very comfortable and it sounds like Peyton is if he can even walk outside and want to eat.  Great signs for a great recovery.

We hope Peyton continues to have a smooth and speedy recovery.  Just know that this is never easy and you are not alone.

All the best to you and Peyton. laugh

Kami, Angel Mackenzie and Kobe

P.S. I'm from NH originally, also lived in MA and now live in CA- where in MA are you from?

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Sounds like Peyton is doing really well.  Emily did not do well on tramadol either.  She sat and stared into space like she was totally stoned!  We just took her off it cold turkey and she did really well off of it.  What pain meds is Peyton on?

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

At the time of my last posting he was on:

Rimadyl 3/4 tab 2 x day

Tramadol 2 tabs 3 x day

Gabapentin 2 tabs 2 x day

Last night I cut down the Tramadol to 1 tab 3 x day and will see how he does.  I'd like to taper the Gabapentin this week too but I'm not sure if it's too soon.  I plan on calling my vet in the am to talk with her about it as the surgeon was very vague about tapering both the tramadol and the gabapentin and didn't seem worried about withdrawal.

Thanks for the update! Many dogs can handle the pain better than the side effects from many medications. Dr Waldman suggests cutting pain meds for 24-48 hours and monitoring behavior when suspecting they may not be needed anymore or might be causing negative reactions.
