I am at a loss. My little pup is in pain and I’m running out of ways for her to take her codeine pills. Once she takes them she feels better. I’ve tried hiding them in cream cheese. That worked for a bit until it didn’t. Then hotdogs. That worked for a a bit too and now she doesn’t trust it. Now any food I feed her, she picks it apart with her front teeth trying to find a pill. I really need help! Anything that you can think of that will mask the codeine and will be completely appetizing to her? Mind you she’s on chemo and her appetite is already bad to begin with. Desperately need help. I just want her to feel better 😢

I've always had luck with my cheesy plate method, see video.  Also- be sure you don't touch the pill with your fingers and then touch the food- the taste and smell will transfer.

When my first Tri Maggie got supper picky all I could do was put them down her throat.  Not at all what I wanted to do but she was in renal failure and wouldn't eat.

I'll bet the cheesy pills trick works!

Also check out our pet pilling tips and appetite tips, there's bound to be some things in there that can help. Please let us know what works. You can do this!

I use low sodium ham and spray cheese (like cheese whiz).  I take the ham, lay it open, spray some the cheese whiz in the middle (to keep the pill from falling out), and then push the pill into the cheese whiz, and roll it up like sushi.  Even the most clever of my poodles cannot get the pill out.  But if your dog does not have an appetite - this won't work.  Sometimes just pushing the pill to the back of your dog's throat is the only way to get it down.
