We were told to stay on the Rimadyl until the prescription ran out, so a few days after suture removal.  On suture removal day, we cut out the mid-day dose of Tramadol (originally we had been on every 8 hours).  Our surgeon also gave us the freedom to give the Tramadol as we deem appropriate.   We eventually reduced from 3 pills each dose to one, then eliminated the morning dose (leaving just 1 pill before bed).   I think we stopped entirely toward the end of the third week.   We weren't on Gabapentin, so that did not play into it.   For what it was worth, it was obvious to me when Otis no longer needed the Tramadol.   So, if you are unsure based on Bandit's reaction, then it might make sense to continue or taper more slowly.
