It has been a week since Emily's amputation. She has been doing so great but tonight she is breathing so heavily. Do you think that this is because of being in pain?
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

If she is still breathing hard this morning I would have her checked by the vet. It's better to be safe during the recovery period.

I agree with Shanna- if you have any doubts check with your vet. I am sure it is nothing but it will make you feel better to get it checked out. I was up at the vet almost every couple days with Wrigley's revovery- most of the times they sent me home with the everythings OK- once we had to do some extra draining. These 2 weeks of recovery are really tough and it's so hard because our babies can't talk and tell us what is going on.
Is Emily still on the pain meds? Those can make them seem like their breathing is heavy. They can make them seem really different from what you are used to.

Panting is a sign of discomfort, but don't mistake side effects (or withdrawal) from the pain med as additional pain. What is Emily currently taking? Tramadol is known to cause panting. Did she have a Fentynal patch? We've heard stories of heavy withdrawal symptoms once those are removed.
The weeks after recovery will be filled with good days and bad. As pups regain their strength they tend to overdo it and tire easily. Do consult your vet with any serious concerns or if symptoms continue. And please keep us posted. Best wishes...

All of the above is great advice. I often thank God for Shanna & Trouble, Seanne & Angle Wrigley, and Rene, Jim & Spirit Jerry. They are always there quickly with great advice and comfort. At the week mark, I would presume that you are coming off some of the pain medications. This could be the reason for the panting, but checking with the vet would help if only to ease your concerns. Our local vet is also a friend of the family and will tell you that we visited often, as well as the oncologist and surgeon during the first two months. Getting back to the problem at hand, Cherry did much better after the chemicals were gone from her body. We even had to remove the Tramadol significantly early in the journey because of the difficulties. Keeping on top of the issues is always good policy.
Hoping for the best and will be watching for an update.

Thank for you advice. Emily is doing so much better this morning We gave her a rimadyl last night and after about 30 minutes she called down. Her incision looks great so I didn't know what to think. Now I think you are probably right She is having withdrawl!!! We will still watch it and call the vet if it happens again but thanks to all of you!

Glad to hear Emily is doing better. Sounds like a classic recovery, with good days and bad. Just keep a close watch over her and take it one day at a time. Thanks for the update!
