Hi everyone,
So oscar is now 3 weeks post op and about 2 weeks in we thought we were over the worst, stitches out and we managed to get him upstairs and back to his usual spot and he slept through the night..RESULT!
Well that was a one off, since then he has woken every night at around 2am panting really heavily for hours I don't know how to help him. He is not warm, I have all windows open and it's below freezing outside. I don't think he should be in pain, he is off tramadol and just on metecam once a day and the vet says that can stop soon. I take him out on the garden and he is happy for 5 mins and still drinking maaaaasive bowls of water all at once.
It's almost like he is having a panic attack and is winding himself up more and more and I just don't know how to help him.
Anybody else experienced this? I was wondering if anyone had any advice?
Oscar is a big pooch he is wolfhound cross so it's quite difficult to soothe him unless I get him on the bed and spoon him but then he does get hot...
Any advice welcomed!
Thank you 🐕🐶
Is Oscar on any pain meds other than the Metacam and Tramadol? Panting can be a sign of pain but it can also be the Tramadol itself. When you say that he is winding himself up, that makes me think it might be the Tramadol side effects. It can make some dogs pant and act anxious. Our Ellie was like that, and it just got worse and worse the longer she was on Tramadol. If you are confident that he is not in pain, then I would see how it goes once he's been off Tramadol for a couple of days.
Has he always been a big drinker? If there has been a change recently, I might mention it to the vet just to see what they think.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
It is not unusual for a pooch to have a hard time at this point in recovery, so have hope. I haven't been around the boards a lot lately so their are others who will have really good input.
If it is anxiety based, instead of comforting him you might try redirecting. Have him run through tricks, entice him with a favorite toy, or something else like that. That's how trainers often deal with anxious dogs. I realize this is not thrilling at 2:00 AM

Hi, I'm a new tri mom. karl just had his surgery Friday afternoon. So I'm not a seasoned expert, but I did have an interesting experience . Karl was very uncomfortable panting and crying ( normal after surgery) yet he was much better after he went out potty. It was interesting.
Hope things improve for you and your sweetie soon.
🙂 hugs, Karl and mom Julie
Hmmm. Yep, panting can be a sign of pain. Metacam wouldn't do that, as it doesn't affect the nervous system the way Tramadol does. What is his activity level like in the daytime? How long are his walks? What does he do? He may be overdoing things. It's just a guess. That, combined with the sudden increase in drinking water, is worth mentioning to your vet so all angles can be covered.
