Hi everyone, I've never registered for a forum site before, but this is a special deal. Our 5 year old mixed breed, Captain Jack, was diagnosed with bone cancer last week and is getting his leg amputated tomorrow. When he was first diagnosed, this site really helped calm me and gave me a TON of helpful information, so I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who post on here and help other people in the same situation. I hope to see more of everyone in the future and thanks again!
Welcome to our little group. Hope Captain Jack has a really speedy recovery and is back to being himself in no time.
Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul. Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

OOooh, Captain Jack is a great name! We can't wait to see his photo. Thanks for registering and becoming a part of our family here.
Well, we are so glad to be able to help out. As you can see, there is a great bunch of people here who offer not just advice but a shoulder to lean on. Good luck tomorrow, and please let us know how we can help. Keep in mind that the road to recovery may get a little ruff, but overall, you'll be amazed at how much better Captain Jack will do at recovery than any human ever will!
We send our healing thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery. Please keep us posted.

Hello:
I hope you got through today. I don't think I slept for about 48 hours before/during/after surgery until my body said, oh yeah, WATCH THIS!
This is truly the greatest place ever isn't it? I read, I learn, I share in triumphs, I cry in sympathy, it's very cathartic.
Maybe because everybody you meet here, GETS IT! I have sympathetic non-pet owner friends, but I know deep down they think we are little nuts.
Keep strong and let us know how you are doing!

Thanks for all your kind words! I called this morning to check up on Jack and the vet tech said she went in to give him his morning treatments and he started running in circles, giving kisses, wagging his tail, and jumping up on the counter like nothing ever happened! Now we just have to wait for the biopsy which is the hard part. We bring him home this evening so I'm sure I'll be posting lots of questions. Thanks again, guys <3

I wish Captain Jack a speed recovery.
My story is similar to yours....and Morgan is having his amputation today....(I just learned about this site...).
I am scared for him but I feel better reading what I have seen posted and knowing he will adapt better
than I think he will..
Was anyone allowed to take their baby home the same day as surgery?? Morgan is coming home the same day...
Thanks in advance

Our thought are with you and Captain Jack. Our night after surgery with Toffee was tough to say the least. We weren't sure coming home that soon was the best idea, but I know now we wouldn't have had it any other way. She was home with the ones that love her and took care of her every need. Toffee was up and moving too much after surgery, so had to be tranquilized, which knocked her out for even longer.
Is Jack small? I don't know if that makes a difference or not; Toffee is 80 lbs, so more weight to bear, but I guess maybe it's all relative.
Prayers that Jack keeps circling, kissing and wagging!
Laura and Toffee
Melb: As far as taking your dog home the same day, I think most places require at least one night post-surgery. I've read a couple stories where owners have taken their doggies home too early and have to take them back to the vet because their dog gets too anxious. Also, there may be a lot of post-surgery leakage from the wound, and the longer the dog stays at the vet, the less tender the wound becomes. When we went to pick up Jack yesterday, his wound was a little drippy and they offered to let us keep him there one more night. At which point I started crying and they went ahead and put bandages on him and we got to take the little guy home 🙂 He's doing great but is still a little "under the influence" so hopefully he will perk up in a couple days. I hope Morgan does fantastic and let us know any updates!!!
Laura: Jack was 47 pounds, but he lost 4 pounds yesterday! (hehe) He seems to move pretty good but gets tired fast. He got one of his front legs amputated, and I can see how if he was a larger dog there would be a lot more stress when he lands on one leg after hopping. I hope Toffee is keeping happy!!!
