Hello all,

My Bug, Bugsy just lost his front leg due to a turmor about 2 weeks ago. He is 13 yrs old and has handled the everything like a trouper!! Not definate word from Cornell on what the turmor is yet. They are doing more testing. Looking for ideas for what I need to do for him. I have a good diet (already had one dog with lymphoma so I'm familar with cancer diets) I'm looking at the Ruff Gear harness and I need a single elevated bowl. Any other ideas are welcome!! Thank you!

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

The Ruff Wear harness can certainly help, as do various traction solutions to prevent falls on slippery floors. Please bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List for much more advice and recovery/care tips.

Welcome to Tripawds Heather and Bugsy!

Wow, 13 years old, that's great!  I am approaching 13 with one of my quad-pugs Tani, she is the oldest I have had.

My Tri-pug Maggie was a rear amp due to mast cell cancer.  She lived almost 4 years after her amp. You can read Maggie's Story here.  There is a page that talk about her treatment too.

I had a Ruff Wear Harness for Maggie, and I have used them on my quad pugs as well.  I have had difficulty fitting them as they are big chested with relatively short torsos.  I have had to modify the ones I use which invalidates the warranty, but makes them work.  How big is Bugsy?

Other than what you are doing I would second Admin guy on the traction .  It was really important on my trex deck for Maggie- she would only come up the stairs on the mats I put down for her.

Bugsy was 25 pounds before the surgery. We have new rug thru the house so far far no trouble walking except the kitchen. I will look at the traction options!! I worried about the fit of the harness to because he is built like a pug. He's bigger then my pugs however and longer. I have 2 pugs and a boston. Bugsy is the oldest. Thanks for the replies!!

I'm new to the blog as well.  My 10 year old boxer, Duke, had his back, left leg amputated to the hip on Thursday.  He's done very well, but has started having some drainage over the last couple of days.  Is this normal?  I know they can get seromas, but I don't really know anything about how this works.  I'm on the live chat if anyone is available to chit chat!

Overall, I think he is doing fairly well.  He is drinking well, but is not eating.  I haven't been giving him the Tramadol for the last day or two because he doesn't seem to be hurting.

I hope your baby is continuing to do well hnladeu!

Hi Heather, Bugsy, Duke & Micky! Welcome to Tripawds.

As the others have mentioned, if you both check out Jerry's Required Reading List you'll read about things like seromas, which are very common and usually not serious. If the drainage is smelly and the incision looks red or irritated, please call your vet asap as that could indicate infection.

My biggest advice; go with your gut instinct. If something doesn't feel right, call your vet. Even if it turns out to be nothing serious (which is usually the case), you'll feel sooo much better after a quick phone call.

Also, Micky please consider starting a new topic all about Duke so we can keep track of his progress OK? Keep us posted!

Welcome to you and Bugsy - what a cutie!

Sounds like you have gotten some good advice already and are on top of the cancer diet needs. When you find out what kind of tumor it was, let us know - more than likely there will be someone here who's dealt with the same thing.

Love to hear that an older pup is handling everything so well!

Hope he continues to do great. Keep us posted,

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Typically, they keep a tripawd on Tramadol and/or remadyl and an antibiotic for 10-14 days post surgery.  Was Duke eating prior to you not giving the Tramadol or has he just not regained an appetite since the surgery?
