Sam our 4 year old Berner is 10 days post amp (osteosarcoma) and had his first round of chemo yesterday. He is extremely lethargic and nauseous - it was a long night. The fresh air seems to help so we sat outside on the ground until 3:30am with his worried 3 year old brother right by his side! We're hoping this reaction will be short lived. Does it generally seem to be a 24-48 hour thing? Aside from the past 24 hours, he's doing fantastic. He's adapting well and really getting around like a rock star. Love to hear of any tricks to help him power through the chemo side effects! Many thanks from this very tired Mamma!

back when we did chemo, they started with a shot of benedryl, then fluids, then the chemo (we did doxorubicin), then more fluids.  pretty much a full day for both of us at the vet.  gayle also had some nausea meds she'd take - Cerenia - which seemed to help.  good luck, hopefully this 'yucky' feeling will pass quickly.

First of all welcome, and thanks for joining. Did your vet give Sam anything for the nausea?

Did he or she explain when side effects may occur? If not, don't miss this canine chemotherapy session video with certified oncologist Dr. Mona Rosenberg describing chemo side effects (@ 1:55±).

Hope this helps, please keep us posted.

Just saying welcome to Tripawds Sam. We do not have any experience in the chemo dept but lots of folks here to help.

What type of chemo is he getting?  Adriamycin (doxorubricin) seems harder on them than carboplatin.  An injection of Cerenia before chemo can help and Carafate or metronidazole for a few days after chemo helps with GI upset.  Ask your vet about Power Mushrooms or K9 Immunity as well as fish oil to help his immune system.

Many thanks. He's on carboplatin and did receive Cerenia before. Also have Cerenia for home and gave him some this morning. He's just turned the corner in the last 2 hours. We had plenty of warning of the potential side effects - I guess we just thought he would be ok as so many are able to tolerate it. We also were not expecting such a reaction on the first day. I guess we were just being naive. He's got the life back in his eyes now. It was miserable watching him so sick..he was such a trooper through surgery last week and just back up and feeling good..ugh! Relieved to see he can get throughthe bad part quickly...we'll be better prepared next round! Leave it to Sam to be an over achiever...have side effects earlier and more severe than the norm...that's why we love him to pieces!

Hi Sam and mom,

Welcome to Tripawds.  I'm glad to here that Sam is doing so well with the amp recovery.  Which leg did he lose?

My pug Maggie had mast cell cancer so was on a different chemo regimen.  When she did have a reaction it was several days later,  and at the worse was mild nausea. We used metoclopramide for the nausea, but only a couple of times.  But then Maggie was never an over achiever laugh.

How about a picture of Sam?

Hi Sam and family,

Our vet prescribed 1/2 a zantac twice a day for a week and anti B's as a precaution for Millie after each chemo session. Apart from an occasional bad tummy and a urine infection after chemo#2 she has been absolutely fine. Sessions 3 and 4 have been trouble free and we have the 5th this coming week. She has really settled into the chemo program to the extent that when she comes home from the vet, I wonder if she has even had the treatment.

Hope things improve for Sam next time.

Glenn, Millie and Sid2.

Hi welcome to tripawds. Sorry to hear that poor Sam had nasty side effects to his chemo.  Emily took prolesic (sp?) after her chemo and did not have any problems with her stomach.  She did have a secondary drop in her white blood cell count around day 14 so her chemo had to be stretched a little further apart.

I will be looking forward to getting to know your little guy.

Yikes.  My first post disappeared.  Welcome to tripawds.  I'm sorry Sam had such a bad reaction to his chemo.  Our vet had us give Emily prolesic (sp?) and she didn't have any problems with nausea.  She did have a secondary drop in her white blood cell count around day 14 so her chemo had to be stretched a bit.  It happens sometimes but is nothing to worry about so if it happens to Sam don't freak!

Anyway, welcome and I know we will all be looking forward to getting to know your boyl
