My 13-year-old service dog is having her right rear leg amputated tomorrow. I'm confident I made the right decision but I manage depression, anxiety and PTSD. She will be in the hospital until Monday at 5pm (St Louis, Mo time) when I pick her up. I am so scared of being without her. I am scared of the incision and how she will look. I am unsure if I can take care of her or how to take care of her. Are there any tripawds from the St. Louis area in this group?
Joyce I am so glad you posted! I talked to you yesterday on the Tripawds Helpline (I'm Rene, Jerry's mom).
You'll recall I mentioned that your AAHA-accredited hospital is top-notch! You can't get better care for Suebee. She will be in great hands, and since they have 24/7 care she will have people spoiling her all weekend. Plus 3/3 is Tripawd Awareness Day so it's a great start to her new life on three legs!
Did you get a chance to look at the posts I sent you in my email? I hope they helped.
Yes it is scary to think of the future. You'll have to do your best to stay pawsitive though, for her sake. Try really, really hard not to cry when you leave her tomorrow. You want her to go into surgery knowing you are OK and things are going to be fine. I know it will be a long weekend for you, but that will give you time to prepare your home.
I remember you said you have a single story, no stairs, and pretty easy access for her to go outside. Basically the dream setup for recovery! YAY!
The incision will be shocking but try not to focus on that. Look into her eyes when you see her and show her how happy you are that she is ready to be on that road to recovery.
You said she had some kind of lymphoma-like cancer happening in the rear leg? Do you remember the diagnosis?
If you'd like to find local Tripawds, put a call-out in our Tripawds Parties Forum. When Suebee is all healed up she'll be ready for a get-together!
