Just wanted to pass on something that happened to my golden, Hope, about a month after her surgery, in case this ever happens to your dog.

Hope was sleeping on the floor when it was time for all the dogs to go outside.  Hope startled us when she couldn’t get up.  She could just lift her head slightly and she had a look of total terror in her eyes; her neck was outstretched and rigid.  We were sure she was having a stroke….or worse.

After about 5 minutes of us talking to her and rubbing her body, she finally came around.  Since she has not had a recurrence, our vet said if sounded like she had a muscle spasm around the neck/chest area.  Should it happen again, he advised us to massage the area.

Thank you for sharing this with everypawdy. Again, we're so glad it wasn't serious.

As we mentioned in your blog, these tips for managing phantom pain in dogs offer some great advice for dealing with spasms.

Massages are GOOD even if you don't have a spasm!  I think you should get one just because!

Riley started having muscle spasms in her chest and then it went into her back legs in late May / early June and within a couple weeks her tail stopped wagging and then everything started going down hill from there.....so when she pulled the muscles in her chest a couple weeks ago she ended up on complete bed rest and without her able to move, run, play etc..the muscle spasms have stopped.

I think with all the stairs at my house - she had never fully given herself time to heal from the amputation - so now the stairs are blocked off and she is doing so much better.

The vet said she had only seen 1 other dog that had muscle spasms in all the years she has been a vet...Apparently its not very common.
