Hi all,
Jerry suggested I post about the medication that Dieter received to help with GI issues after chemo. He's not had severe issues, although he's been showing signs (drooling, vocalizing, soft stools) of some discomfort. Our vet gave him Maropitant, and it seems to be helping him. It takes a little while to get into his system, but I've been giving it to him at night with the idea of it helping him to be more comfortable while he's sleeping (and I'm sleeping, haha). They gave me just enough to get him through the initial reaction to the chemo, and I'm going to just ask for the same thing each time he goes in for treatment.
Hope this helps!

You're pawesome, thank you for this, it's great info to have here.
Maropitant is one that I'm not familiar with, does anyone else have experience with it that they'd like to share?
I'm glad it's working for him.

I would like to ask if Metaclopromide has been tried and if not, why not? I ask because while its an old drug.... it does work and I do wonder if some of the drugs that are old might not still be a good choice primarily because they are so well known? I was surprised to read that this did not appear to be the first drug of choice. Was I wrong?
Metoclopramide (Reglan) is a good drug but some dogs (especially small breeds) can get a little weird or have neurologic signs while taking it. Reglan also only lasts 8-12 hours while Cerenia lasts 24 hours. I do still use Reglan for large breed dogs with chronic vomiting syndrome since they tolerate it well and the drug is cheap.

It makes me sleepy. I did 5 years chemo and they gave me met when they gave me morph but I didnt need it. I find very unexpected anti emetic and appetite stimulant properties from risperidone.
