How much time did everyone have with their beloved pet after amputation from osteocarcoma.  Did you find it worth the trauma and recovery the pet had to go through.  Would you do it again ?

Hi there!

You might want to check out our most recent Tripawds Quality of Life Survey which has some interesting insight from the community. Overall, nearly 100% of people say they would do it again, even if their pet didn't live up to the prognosis.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Do you have a dog or cat with osteosarcoma? Have you been through amputation yet?

Remember that with this cancer, it's all about quality of life. And although the vets can give you a prognosis, it's not a guarantee. Some dogs and cats will outlive that prognosis so you just never know.

P.S. Please remember these Forums will be turned into read-only very soon. Hop on over to the new Tripawds Support Circle to continue your hero's story and get feedback from the community!

We have a 13 year old female pitbull diagnosed with osteocarcoma.  We are planning a rear leg amputation but she does have arthritis in the other rear leg.   I am concerned about her recovery since her other leg isn't as strong due to the arthritis.  Her chest scans were clean and she would start chemo a week after the amputation.  I know the prognosis and remaining time can vary.  I just would hate to put her through the trauma of the surgery and the recovery only to lose her in 2 months.

Yes it's a tough decision for any dog but when the dog is older it's even harder. There is a new option called Cementoplasty that you might want to consider. It's a limb sparing surgery and has worked well for many dogs who weren't the greatest candidates for surgery. It's not widely done because it's so new but if you happen to be near a provider it's a game changer.
