HI! I'm a mom for a beautiful 5yr old shitzu/bichon mix that went through rear leg amputation. She was diagnosed with high grade soft tissue sarcoma. We got clear margins and no spread any where else. Pathology found lymph invasion in the leg that was amputated so oncologist recommend chemo to treat what may be present on a cellular level...We are 4 weeks post op and she is doing great! today we just started first round of doxorubicin chemo. Good news is wasn't fibrosarcoma or hemangiosarcoma. We have to go every 3 weeks for 5 treatments total. Any advice on what to expect, how dogs typical do, and prognosis. Any advice or experience related to this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Dogs typically tolerate the chemo better than humans.  Trouble had 5 rounds of carboplatin.  She was a bit droopy several hours after administration, but by the next morning was good as ever.  She had a little nausea, and after the first treatment, she was given an injection for the nausea prior to the chemo.  There were a couple of later treatments that produced some chills, but for a very brief period.

Sending good thoughts to you for a non-eventful treatment plan and many great years together.

Welcome to Tripawds.

My pug Maggie lost her left rear leg to a mast cell tumor.  She did chemo for 6 months but it was a different set of drugs.  She tolerated it quite well, only having some slight nausea a couple times.  Once her white blood cell count was to low to get her treatment, we had to delay a week.  It's a relatively common occurrence so if it happens to your pup don't get too concerned.

I've heard that doxorubicin is sometimes harder on pups than carboplatin but every dog is different.  Most pups deal with chemo pretty well.

I did a forum search for doxorubicin and found these topics.  Something there might help with your questions.

Best of luck with the chemo-

Welcome, welcome, welcome!! Is that her as your avatar. HOW CUTE!!!

4 weeks post, that's great! Seems to me you've got the worst behind you. There really isn't anything I can add that hasn't already been said. Just know there's always an ear here for you to blast for any reason at all. That's what helped me more than anything else. I would panic and someone would always neutralize my fears.

Bottom line, you will know what will work for Bella better than anyone else, sometimes even more than the vet. But if you've got a good support group (vets) trust them along with your own gut. They have the advantage of being able to look, without emotion, for her (and yours) best interest.

Hope that all makes sense, it did in my head before I started typing.
