'Knuckles" is a 5 month of pit bull pup that my friends nephew abandoned at Dallas animal services because he was born with a pretty severe congenital defect/deformity and I went after him my conscience wouldn't let me leave him there.he had the entire front leg amputated on the 3rd but then it opened up that same night and he was fine for the first few days but then started very loudly yelping crying and I mean loud! So I figured something was wrong ,came home and he had managed to pull 2 staples out so took him back to vet   they re sutured  and said they saw signs of infection which is not good and prescribed anti biotics along with pain meds The loud yelping/crying is really stressing me out and wearing me down o don't know if this is just normal as iv never delt with amputation before or if I need to tell the vet to maybe up the pain killers to something stronger .when he does this you can hear it through the house snd it has gotten almost deafening  at times he is kinda spoiled I'm not sure if he's doing this wanting attention because he knows I will react or maybe bring dramatic any advice would be appreciated will this stop? Is it normal? Or should I be alarmed?

Hello and welcome! Your future post won't need to wait for approval so please post away

yes, it really does sound like your dog is in need of better pain control. Can you tell us what is the pain medication he is on and what are the dosages and what does he weigh? We're not vets but we could give you some guidelines for a conversation with your veterinarian to get him better pain control ASAP

We are looking forward to hearing back from you.

First of all, thank you for saving that sweet Pittie puppy who deserved a chance.  I'm sure you know the likelihood of Knuckles ever leaving the shelter before being put down pretty much zero.

Yes, as Jerry noted, please let is know more about his pain control.  This is MAJOR surgery and he needs to be kept quiet and just  take short leashed potty breaks for the first two weeks.

Is he eating, drinking,  pottying okay?  His activity  level really needs to be very low key for now.

the entire front leg amputated on the 3rd but then it opened up that same night and he was fine for the first few days

Did this happen overnight  at the Vet or at home?  Was it a few days before the Vet tended to it or that night or next day?

they re sutured  and said they saw signs of infection which is not good and prescribed anti biotics along with pain meds

Just to clarify, he was on pain meds prior to this wound opening up, but the Vet just added additional??  Domyou have a cone on him to prevent him getting to the stitches?

Also, regarding the yelping, checkout information  on phantom pain It's basically a sharp quick nerve pain that makes dogs Yelp and cry and usually try to get up and run away from the pain. Gabapentin is generally the best pain med to help this, as well as the regular surgery pain.

Recovery is no picnic for the first week or two, that's for sure. With proper pain control and very little activity other than potty and outside, things will slowly start to get better.

Stay connected and please let us know how he's doing, his pain meds, etc. Remember, recovery doesn't last forever it just feels like it right now!

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS.   Oh and here's one more link to give you some more information.  Tripawds What to Expect

My dog whimpered for the first couple if nights. I talked with the vet who instructed me to give him more anxiety medication which I did. I gave the anxiety medication in between his pain pills which worked really well. I would encourage you to talk with your vet about anxiety medication in addition to pain meds.

Really glad to hear that. Please let us know how things are going and ask any questions that will help you help him have a good recovery.
