Hello all!! My 7.5 yo Yorkie Lily had her front left amputated this past Tuesday (so 6 days ago). She was fine for the first 2 days, a bit groggy from the meds.
In the middle of the night Thursday/Friday morning Day 4 she had developed two big lumps that were black - below the incision - basically where her armpit would be. At 2:30 am it was just a sore lump, by 8:30 am it had split the skin open a bit and was oozing out. Got her to the vet right away, they flushed it out, cleaned her up and gave her lots of antibiotics to take.
It was still oozing gunk but they didn't want to bandage it yet.
Day 5, I bought some breast pads to place under her while she lay down so that she and the bedding didn't get covered in the smell of ugh. The area (about 4 cm*2cm) was yellow but the edges were starting to improve. When she went outside to go pee I gently tied a piece of cotton sheet around to cover the spot to keep the dirt out.
This morning Day 6, half of it came away in the night. So we had a big gaping hole. Well big in my head. So I took her straight to the emergency hospital in town.
Now she is there awaiting surgery to hopefully repair the hole and get rid of any and all necrotic tissue. It will probably be a few more hours before I hear any news.
I'm making an assumption that I'm not the only Tripawd parent this has happened to.
Any advice or things I should expect? I'll even take the horror stories as there's always something to learn from the bad.
Thanks,
Lily's Mum
Hi Lily's mum, welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away. I hope you have good news about her by now!
Your intuition is spot-on, you aren't alone in this post-op infection ordeal. I'm so sorry it happened. What a great idea with the breast pads! Did they stay on?
The good news is that they caught it right away and are taking steps to help her heal. Did they culture the ooze to check for MRSA ?
As for what to expect, well, it kind of depends on the extent of the surgery that she had done. Sometimes everyday bandage changes are necessary sometimes not, it varies. Your vet can guide you on the technical side of caring for the surgical site. My best advice to you is stay strong as you are doing now, and know that this is only a temporary situation, she's got everything on her side to heal and get strong!
What was the reason for amputation?

Awww....so sorry Lily is having this extra hurdle. Ad Jerry noted, thus does hapoen.
But gir now, we'll just wait to hear back from you for an update, okay? Then we can take it from there.

Thanks for the welcome Jerry and Benny55!
She came through the surgery but she was very infected. So they had to remove all her fat under there. Luckily the infection doesn't seem to have gone any further.
I had the option of picking her up last night but I asked the surgeon what she would do if it was her baby and she said keep her in the ICU to make sure all is well.
I'm to call at 10 am to check in and see if she's ready for discharge. There were no calls in the night so no news is good news. We will stay up here at the lake so that she can rest (without a busy city house of people and a big puppy jumping all over). I need a break too!!
She probably should have been sent home with antibiotics after the amputation surgery and had a drainage tube... And when I brought her to my vet on Friday, they should have said take her to the ER now. It's so hard to trust what the vet says when your gut is screaming 😱😱😱 at you!!
But the Emergency surgeon says she got it all out and Lily was on IV antibiotics all day yesterday which for sure should help.
They did take a sample which will be picked up by the lab today, will know if she has something resistant by the end of the week. We are up in a rural area at our lake home so things move a bit slower than in the big city. I can't remember if our vet took a sample on Friday. Hopefully they did so that we might have results earlier.
How did she get to three legs? Up here at the resort there are plenty of open spaces for the dogs to walk. We have a 10 month old Border Collie too and he loves to play catch, so Lily and I joined my husband and the puppy in a field. Lily wanted to sniff around so I made the stupid mistake of letting go of the leash so she could wander a bit away from me. She walked into some tall grass and then the grass stopped moving. She had found a groundhog hole and she lost her mind and went straight in and down. Yorkie owners will understand that crazy bred in the bone hunting instinct. She has it bad.
Now the rest is a blur. We tried to call her out, she's barking and I couldn't tell if it was her excited hunting bark or "I've encountered a furry creature and we're fighting" bark as it was muffled because she's down the bleaming hole. Either way I wanted her out asap. We tried to pull her back out slowly with the bit of leash we could reach. I could feel her pulling against us because of course she HAD to find the furry creature!!! Then it felt like it was just stuck and then suddenly I've got a leash and harness in my hand but no dog attached. The harness broke. I don't even remember how my husband managed to dig her out of there. She was limping when she was out but still excited and wanting to go back in, hopping around on three legs. We thought maybe it was just pulled out of a socket. Any hoo, rush to her ER, scans show a clean break right across the shoulder in a way that many surgeons were not interested in trying to repair or yes, huge bill but "she'll have to walk very little on it for the rest of her life and may still be painful".
She was moving around well (probably too well) with her bandage on while I continued my search for a surgeon. And finally we discussed it and decided that amputation would be the better option to get her back to a new normal with less pain, etc.. Our local vet was able to find a surgeon to do the amputation... And that's how we got to here.
Oh and Jerry... Re the breast pads, they have sticky strips on the back (to stick on the inside of the bra) so I was able to stick the pads to the strips of soft fabric I used as a cover. The shape was perfect as it's not flat (concave or convex, can't remember my grade 9 science LOL) so it wasn't pressed right against the wound to let air flow in and out.
They are a lot cheaper than a small box of gauze pads! $8 for 10 gauze pads vs $12 for 60 pads. And much more absorbent!!!
Ill let you all know how she does when I finally get her home! Meanwhile I'm going to read more! Thank you for the links and the support!!
Woah! We've seen some wild stories here about how dogs and cats lost limbs, and yours is one-of-a-kind! I'm SO sorry!!! That had to have been terrifying, I can't imagine. She's a tough little pup to have survived and with so much energy too. WOW!
You did right by her, and she's on her way to recovery, that's awesome. It sounds like this surgery should take care of the wound issue. As for the original problem and not adding a drain, there's really two schools of thought on that among vets: some don't like drains because it opens the wound area to more risk of bacteria getting in there. Others use them all the time. It really depends on who you get for a vet, and one preference is not proven to be worse or better than the other. As for trying to save the leg, that is so hit or miss, especially with small dogs. The good thing is that you acted quickly and now she's on her way to getting on with life. And do they! Small dogs get along so well on three. She won't miss it. Humans have a harder time that's for sure, so we are glad you're here.
Sounds like you have a lovely spot for recovery! Snuggle up and give her a few days to just chill on the couch with you. And thanks for the tip on the breast pads! If you happened to get any photos of her wearing your DIY bandage we would love to see them! Here's how adding images works, let me know if you'd like help.
Keep us posted on how things are going.

Thanks so much! I will see if I have any photos of my quick "bandage". I make dolls so I just grabbed some fabric from the bin and my pinking shears and cut some strips.
Lily is now back home. She's acting more like herself. She asked to go out and I carried her to her favourite spot and she went pee right away.
Without the cone she is very steady on her feet. Our regular vet will change her bandage tomorrow. I will ask her if we can opt for a bandage or t-shirt cover (as was suggested in one of the links from Jerry) instead of the cone so she can move easier. I might sew her a shirt with a pocket for the breast pads more for a cushion in case she bumps herself.
I will learn the images soon I promise! Going to have a nap and cuddle with my baby!!
I lied, I had to learn. Hopefully I did this right for Instagram.
Wow she looks great! Thanks for the pic. How neat she's back home, that's wonderful.
You sound so crafty, I'll bet you can come up with a good incision cover-up for her. Lots of folks use baby onesies on smaller Tripawds, you might want to check out that idea. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

OOOOMMMMDDDDD Such a crazy and terrifying backstory as to ,how Lily EARNED her Tripawd Badge!!! You recounted everything so vividly I felt like I was there!! I was breathless after reading it!
And then to have to have a second surgery just a few days after her amputation....WOW!! She is one strong and resilient Warrior of a doggy! And her hoomans are quite extraordinary too!!.
I glad you got her to the right Vet who could take care of her infection issue once and for all! Yeah, any time drainage is smelly....not a good sign! And good for that Vet sending off for ot to be a cultured.
That picture of her you attached is the cutest thing ever!! Lily is abs adorable! Ahe sure knows how to use that CUTENESS to make people smile😁

Hello again! Sorry for the radio silence.
Lily is doing great (knock on wood 🪵🪵🪵). On Tuesday she went in to our regular vet and got her bandage off.
Everything looks great. They didn't bandage her back up so she had to wear the cone until I could cover it.
The smell is gone. It may be a bit stomach turning to think about but I sniff her a few times a day to make sure.
Tomorrow her drain tube is scheduled to come out. Hopefully the draining will be nearly complete.
I'm using her hospital gown for cover and the breast pads to absorb the drainage.
She's sleeping a fair amount but no overly so.
Today I plan on reading everything I can about protecting her remaining limbs. She is getting around really well on three already.
Hope everyone is having a fabulous day!! 🙂
Well are day is pretty darn fabulous NOW, what a great pupdate! This is all really good news and so hopeful that you're both back to smooth sailing. Holler with any questions on the reading and keep us posted.

Hello all! New "pupdate"!!
Lily had her drain out yesterday and all looks great. The vet and all the staff are super happy to see her doing well. Also the lab results came back and the infection was not via a resistant strain. So the current meds should show any last bit of bacteria who's boss!
She's wanting to go for walks again and although she's getting her sea legs I'm holding her back from too much.
So fingers crossed we are going to have no more issues.
I went thrift shopping today and picked up some baby clothes to try on her. Got her this cute 3-6 month old onesie. I will sew up the one side and cut the bottom, adding some elastic around her belly.

Thanks for all of your encouragement and advice!
Okay, there's one thing we need uou to do when you post pictures of Lily, especially if she's in an adorable onesie. You mist tgive us a
CUTENESS ALERT!!!!
We go into CUTENESS overload if we don't prepare ourselves for that much cuteness!!!😉
So glad to hear she has the drain out and everything is looking good! And such a relief that her antibiotics are taking care of business. 👍

THAT is the best onesie ever! Too cute, she makes a great model.
Wonderful news from the vet, she certainly IS the boss! We've got everything crossed for continued success. Cheers to lovely Lily and YOU for staying strong!

Hoppy update! Lily went to the Dogtor today and had her stitches out. Everything looks great and the vet is really pleased.
I confess I let her go for a swim in the lake on the weekend. With her lifejacket on of course she just took off right away. She does have trouble negotiating left hand turns LOL but I'm sure this weekend she'll figure it out.
We've been doing short walks and she now has her gait so smooth that people don't notice she's a Tripawd until she stops. She also runs faster than me but I'm no Andre DeGrasse.
Unfortunately the removal of the leg didn't remove her instinct to chase furry creatures and still try to enter groundhog holes.
