Hi everyone, My 15 lb dog just got his front right leg amputated due to an incident with other dogs. He unfortunately got an infection because the stitches were too tight due to swelling and they busted open. Now he has a huge whole in his side with consistent draining and a terrible smell. He won’t stop yelping at night and no one can get any sleep, not even him. I’m really stressed and want to cry because I wish I could take away the pain and knock him out for the night. I don’t know what to do
Oh your poor pup, I'm so sorry. What's his name? We moved your post here because we thought he deserved his own topic.
It sounds like a serious situation. A few questions so we can help you better:
- How long ago was surgery?
- What is your vet doing to manage the draining and infection? is there a plan being followed?
- And is your dog's pain being managed?
- What infection/pain medications is your pup on?
Sorry for so many questions, but if you can give us more background we can help you more OK?

Okay, deep breath. We can help, but as Jerry noted, there are lots of questions first, okay??
Some proper pain management and some proper care of that infected incision will make a big difference!! So we'll look for your response and look forward to making things better for your pup!
Respond as soon as you can. It may be that you need to seek attention from another Vet. Sorry that the stitches were botched and "seemingly" caused all these issues. It could well be that an unaddressed infection was raging first and that's why the stitches burst.
You'll also want a culture of the infection done so the right antibiotic is given.
Eating? Drinking? Pooping? Peeing?
Okay, hang in there!
Hugs
