Hi, I am new to this site and its going to take me a while to learn how to navigate. My sweet girl had her front left leg amputate this past week. I am looking around for information on keeping her incision protected by wearing a t shirt. She's been wearing a tee, I have several and am trying to cut them to fit better. I am glad to see your advice on having the cone ready to use to prevent itching the incision. Our specialist is an hour away and during this pandemic its hard to get all the information when your only talking on the phone with the provider. Any other places you can recommend on this site to help me figure out how to create a better fit with t shirts? Tess is a 3 year old Weimarainer, lab, pointer mix who had a mast cell tumor that didn't respond to 2 rounds of chemo.
Hi Tess and @mela72, welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away. I'm really sorry you're dealing with mast cell cancer but hopefully the amputation will take care of it. Do you know if she needs more chemo?
Anyhoo, to answer your question, it's a little challenging to create a better fit with t-shirts for an incision. Basically you can 1) buy a kid's t-shirt and see how snug you can get it without restricting her movement, or 2) knot up the bottom of the t-shirt to make it snug around her waist, and sew up the empty arm hole. But honestly, a t-shirt alone isn't usually enough to keep a dog from messing with the incision. We recommend using a cone of shame too.Â
You can also try a custom amputation surgery recovery suit, or even trying a Tripawd Pride t-shirt from our Tripawds store 😉
Meanwhile let us know what other questions you have. I cannot even imagine how challenging it is to go through amputation recovery during a pandemic! We can hopefully put your mind at ease when you are worried but if you ever feel like you need to call your vet, don't hesitate to do it, that's why they're there for you.

Keep us posted on how she's doing!

Just wanted to make sure that worked! I couldn't get my reply back to to show up. Again I have written so many responses with no luck submitting. I'll try again!
Tess is doing well! One week out from her surgery now and is getting around her limited area just fine. I have found her smaller tees that fit better and the neck doesn't work its way down exposing the incision. She is more than ok with her tees so I'm ecstatic about that. She is a short haired dog and doesn't like our PNW rain. Until her hair grows back to cover her incision we'll just keep her covered! Thanks for your support!
OH yay for both counts. I'm glad you were able to post. What kind of error were you getting? And YAY for finding a t-shirt she can live with. That's wonderful news about her recovery!
P.S. I don't like PNW rain either, I'm with Tess 😉
